There is just no getting away from the fact that judges will be affected by the crowd during a fight.
If a judge fails to see exactly what happens when a fighter throws a flurry, he will hear the crowd going wild and unconsciously assume something landed.

The very technical aspects in boxing are starting to be overlooked and unappreciated by both judges and fans.

It seems like fans today see Hopkins turn nearly sideways away from a punch because of fear from getting hit, when in fact he purposely turns his shoulder to block the punch with the force of his bodyweight.

Sometimes he use techniques like that to smother, other times to hurt the opponent's hand and some times just to block incoming fire.

It takes a highly trained eye to see the difference in those things, and it takes an even higher knowledge of the sport to appreciate such advanced skills.

Unfortunately, flash is easier to see and score than substance.
Which is why fights like this are scored like they are, and also the reason fans think Floyd could beat someone like Duran.

Ancient technique and substance are being replaced by speed and flash.

I totally saw that in PBF vs DLH. DLH wasn't landing crap but his flurries were being roared by the crowd and the judges made what should've been a MD blowout to a SD close fight.

Also saw it in the Johnson-Dawson fight. Johnson was catching a lot of Chads punches on his gloves but because they were fluid and eye catching Chad got a lot of credit for them even though Glenn threw fewer punches they were cleaner and did more damage. Not saying Johnson won but at the least it should've been much closer than some of the judges had it.

yup, the crowd most certainly influences fights. ****ing **** man. reminds me of how pac drew against marquez in the first fight but one ***** judge claimed he didn't know the rules - which caused pac the fight.

judges mean ****. absolute ****.

ticks me off a bit that slappy won with non effective, unclean slappy slaps. i don't give a dump what nationality he is. only brits care about that ****. he lost. he knows it. he just isn't man enough to admit it.

i hope his ****y ass gets crushed soon. he needs humbling like roy jones and ricky hatton did.

No doubt, I haven't seen a fighter B, with the crowd heavily pulling for fighter A, manage to win in quite a little while.. Not in a really tight one. The crowd is a factor fa sho. Calzaghe was getting thunderous reception from his nationalist ****'s every time he goose-stepped or did the ******* salute..

That fight was a good example of what I am talking about.
Substance over flash prevailed, but not anywhere near like it should have been.

Agreed with most of the points made (Addison, tyson) about effective punching and amateur style - Calzaghe has little to be proud of in this fight regardless of win or loss. It certainly didn't raise his standing any. Despite all the smack he talked in the post-fight interview, all I witnessed was his style getting largely neutralized and, in managing to get a decision despite this, exposed for the one-dimensional slap-pressuring that it is against an elite fighter (not that I had it a total blowout for Hopkins, but).

Mainly, I'm disappointed that this is how we get represented to the sports world. With MMA breathing down our neck it's painful for me to think about what they will think or say about the sport of Boxing.

It's not just how Calzaghe won, it's his technique, his scientific presentation, that I find personally embarrassing as a Boxing fan. He's got the heart of a lion, and the will of a Rothschild, but running in and windmilling punches that don't even land like a 14 year old girl is not Boxing, and a judge scoring in favor of that is a travesty. I love this game. This was damaging.
