Cornering Mayweather

this is what doesnt make sense, you're comparing Cotto and Floyd as if they are on the same level. Why would you do that? No one here with any serious credibility is even claiming that. So how is Cotto going to have a resume that compares to Mayweather's? Floyd has accomplished what he has because HE is that stand out fighter that ever generation has. But with EVERY stand out fighter, there is going to be a fighter than everyone wants to see him in with. For Leonard it was Hagler, for De LA Hoya it was Trinidad, and now for Mayweather it is Cotto. Its as simple as that. To say that Cotto doesnt earn a shot at Mayweather because he has a promoter is ridiculous. To say that Cotto will earn a shot at mayweather when his resume equal's May's is ridiculous.Post #27 on this thread, but I understand that you're upset. I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. If you want to though you can just let me know. I told you I was going to let it slide. You're the one who seems to think it's a big deal.
I'm just postulating here, so don't take this personal; people probably call you a hater because you want to point the finger at the Floyd fans. Go to boxrec and look at the first five years of Floyd's career and then look at the first five years of Miguel's career. Then look at their careers from that point on. Floyd has it harder earlier then took his break.
Cotto has had a lot of tough fights recently, but his resume isn't any better than Floyd's was at this point in his career. It's not surprising because they had the same promoter. But to say hypocrisy starts with Floyd fanatics is to miss the point that the career paths are very similar...almost identical. Unless Miguel recently signed a long term deal with Top Rank he'd be well served to take the next step that both Oscar and Floyd did and get out of his deal with Top Rank.
Not just the boxing world, but the world of sports would be better off if Cotto were independent. Arum is like a father who wants to control his children who he believes owe him everything they have. He consistently derides DLH and PBF because they are "ungrateful." I'd bet that he thinks Cotto is "grateful" if only based on the simple fact that he's loyally remained promoted by Top Rank.
Don't get me wrong. What Arum says about DLH and PBF not being where they are right now without him is probably true. BUT they are the fighters. Cotto probably wouldn't be where he is now without Arum. Pacquiao probably wouldn't be where he is now without Arum. BUT they are where they are now and they wouldn't be there without their own skill.
So, Cotto really should leave the first chance he gets. It'd open up doors that were never open to him before just as it did for DLH and PBF. I'm not saying he will. I doubt he will, but he should. He's the fighter and he's gotten to the point where he deserves control over his career.
its doesnt even matter though. Cotto isnt pressuring for a fight so thats why im not anymore. As a matter of fact, Boxing has been better off without Floyd in it. I still am a Floyd fan, but I'm not as respectful or devoted as some of you are. I used to be. But I have my own standards as to who I think is worth my attention and praise and I understand that does mean **** to fighters but thats part of being a fan and loving the sport. People are waking up to the BS already and it isnt long before it boils over.Comment

Arum offered the fight to Winky, and as usual he priced himself out of it. That was for the better because Margarito shouldn't be fighting top middleweights. The only talk of a Forrest fight was a couple of months ago when Margarito was mouthing off. Like Winky, Forrest is in a different weight division and the fight makes no sense right now for the new welterweight champion.
Now do me a favor. If you ever get a chance to talk to Forrest or Winky, ask them how long they have been calling out Oscar De La Hoya. You'd better believe they'd both much rather get a fight with DLH every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Those are two other names you'll never hear Oscar mention. He prefers trying to make fights with Ricky Hatton and Steve Forbes. Other than his misadventure with his business partner, he likes opponents that are smaller than him. Go check if you don't believe me.Comment

and why is Oscar being treated like he's the biggest threat in the game right now? what has he done in the last EIGHT years to even justify that mentality? How the **** can a fighter be given such credibility off of acheivements he made almost a whole decade ago?Comment

Don't you know, he beat Mayorga... the best smoker/boxer on the planet.
Oh yeah, and Felix Sturm-he just killed Sturm didn't he.Comment

You keep telling yourself that. Because the truth is Arum didn't make an offer to either. The offers came from the other end.Arum offered the fight to Winky, and as usual he priced himself out of it. That was for the better because Margarito shouldn't be fighting top middleweights. The only talk of a Forrest fight was a couple of months ago when Margarito was mouthing off. Like Winky, Forrest is in a different weight division and the fight makes no sense right now for the new welterweight champion.
Winky and Vernon want to fight Oscar because of the money. It's the same reason everyone wants to fight Oscar. It's getting to the point where everyone wants to fight Floyd because of the money and the chance to say "well even though I lost it was to the P4P #1." And what's more if you call him out and he turns it down you can then say "he's ducking all real challengers."
Whatever. You can convince yourself of whatever you want to believe. Margarito had plenty of fight offers, but his team turned them down. The only reason he fought Williams was because the WBO forced him to and he looked like a major hypocrit by trying to turn it down. Then he lost and was a sore loser about it. But if you want to believe he's something more than that go right ahead. Bob Arum welcomes your PPV dollar every day of the week.Comment

oh ****. my fault. well, he also has Forbes in his sights. he can definitely get a tune up before mayweather but Cotto should be ashamed of himself for gettin a tune up before Margarito. BAD COTTO!! BAD!! YA TU SABE!!!Comment

BUT Leonard-Hagler took 5 years to make. DLH-Trinidad took 3 years to make.Comment
