IMO Referee Steele saved Meldrick Taylor life

lol.....with 2 seconds left chavez would have had to run across the ring at the speed of light and land some mike tyson type shots to kill taylor....after going 12 rounds physically i think that would be HIGHLY improbable....worst stoppage ever...taylor deserved those 2 seconds. period.Comment

doesnt matter the ref is not a time keeper he didnt hear the final bell so he stopped the match he was only focused on watching out for the health of a fighterlol.....with 2 seconds left chavez would have had to run across the ring at the speed of light and land some mike tyson type shots to kill taylor....after going 12 rounds physically i think that would be HIGHLY improbable....worst stoppage ever...taylor deserved those 2 seconds. period.
and u cant argue chavez punches arent lethal just look at meldrick now
like i said better safe than sorryComment

So how about answering his question? You started a thread with a bull**** title, and he called you on it. If there were only two seconds left, and Chavez wasn't in a neutral corner, what possible damage could Taylor have suffered? The answer is on video forever. Even if you think Steele did the right thing (and he didn't), he didn't save Taylor from anything except winning the biggest fight of his life.Comment

Threads like this make me hate an enjoyable series like HBO's Legendary Nights, because people simplify things.
Taylor's not brain-damaged now simply because of what happened on March 17, 1990.
He's brain damaged from all the tough fights he had in the gym and the ring when he took punishment.
Chavez I, Norris, Brown, Espana, Chavez II, Ramos, etc...Comment

i answered mate "i dont think steele cared about the clock he was looking for the health of a fighter at the brink of death"Originally Posted by robjr

i really doubt steele had any idea of the clock he did the right thing
the guy could fight no more 10 or 2 seconds coulda been the difference between life and death
he took a beating that left him brain damaged forever there is the proof of how bad was his healthComment

No, you didn't explain how Steele saved Taylor's life. You only defended Steele's intent. If that had been Meldrick's last fight, then your point about the damage he now has would be somewhat valid. But the fact that he had at 21 more fights after that makes it speculation at best.Comment

still if taylor woulda won the match he woulda had to fight chavez in a rubber match for the third time and that woulda been fatalComment

Taylor took a ton of punishment throughout his career. Sparring plays a big part in guys getting brain damaged, and Philly is notorious for brutal gym wars.
Taylor moved up in weight a year after the Chavez fight and beat a top-rated, undefeated welterweight for the WBA title. He spoke fine in the post fight interviews or leading up to the bouts in the next couple years against guys like Ernie Chavez, Glenwood Brown (another tough fight), Norris, etc...
Hell, he didn't sound brain-damaged after the rematch with Chavez either. He was more dejected than anything, but his speech was alright.Comment
