I already posted in this thread the reasons I think that some fans of Calzaghe + Hopkins are so forceful in their opinions.
I do think though that this criticism of Calzaghe's fans as deluded is a little bit unfair, and comes from, I won't say delusion, but perhaps some of Hopkins fans are being a little selective with their assessment of the facts.
There are plenty of good reasons to believe that Calzaghe might beat Hopkins pretty easily.
1) That is exactly what he has done to almost every opponent he has ever faced.
2) He looks to be carrying a lot of advantages over Hopkins. The only advantages anyone seems to be able to attribute to Hopkins, other than a quasi-mystical appeal to some sort of 'toughness', 'smartness', 'clever old-pro ness' etc, is a 'counter right hand' and a suggestion that Hopkins will cheat.
3) Hopkins has relatively recently lost fights to inferior opposition than Calzaghe in Jermain Taylor.
4) Hopkins is 43! No-one, I repeat no-one is immune to the effects of aging, and I doubt that Hopkins is the first fighter ever to look after himself!
Predicting a Calzaghe victory, even a comfortable one, is anything but deluded. All the available evidence suggests that that is what will probably happen. It doesn't make it certain, and I'm sure Hopkins will make it a fight, but when all the evidence is in, that looks, right now, to be the most likely outcome.
