He had to beat both Byrd and Chambers, who had at least as good a reputation as Povetkin himself. there was no guarantee that he couldbeat either of them.

In fact, having seen the Chambers-Povetkin fight, I really don't know what all the fuss is about. It looked-at a casual glance- that there would be little to chose between Povetkin and Ibragimov and I'd give the edge to Ibragimov. With him, it was just that he had NO answer to Klitschko's size, skills and power. He looked to be extremely "wary" of him. And I'd bet that Povetkin will suffer the same fate, and lose every round, unless he stands still within reach for moment or two. Then, he's likely to be beaten down.
edgar, just an FYI, you arguing with potatoes is a bit like Klitschko/Povetkin

total mismatch. save your breath, he is only antagonizing.

If he had wanted to fight Povetkin he could have made some noise about it.

The game of politics in boxing is like a chess match, you have to plan ahead. Unification is not an easy thing to do, especially when conflicting mandatories can lead to forfeiture of a title. I find it hard to believe that a man who has a Phd can't figure this out?
POTATOES- If you insist on ignoring FACTS, and talking hyperbole, there's no point in my pointing out (I'm going to do it anyway-and NO PUN INTENDED) that Povetkin just became the mandatory at the very end of January, 2 months ago. Thompson officially became the mandatory last June or July, but, as someone else on this topic pointed out, he was supposed to have fought Ibragimov for the title, but it "went off". AND.....as someone else pointed out, Klitschko decided to fight Thompson, because he's been waiting longer for his title chance. Thompson is, from the facts before us, a far more difficult opponent, and this shows, contrary to your disparaging of klitschko, that he has a good sporting attitude, and likes "fair play". He may(or not) feel that Thompson is easier, but no one else thinks so-except you.

Funny you should write this just now, and I'm actually laughing about it. I've, just this very second keyed off a message to him saying that if he keeps insisting on nonsense, then there's no point in my continuing. I was more polite of course, but your antic[pation was uncanny. I'm off to bed and 3-4 hours of reading.

And while I'm still laughing I just suddenly thought of a famous old Jazz tune played by Louis Armstrong around 1926, called " ######-head Blues" You can guess why I'm laughing.

I am a fan of Povetkin, but I don't like his chances at all against Wlad...He is too damn susceptible to right hands and that is a recipe for disaster against Wlad.

Thompson has been waiting a long time for his shot, Povetkin is still young and only has 15 pro fights under his belt....Povetkin can wait his turn to be executed by Wlad.

Povetkin has hardly any head movement he is no Frazier or Tyson, He is a bit slow imo and lacks one punch power, He has good work rate but i cant see him beating Wlad.

are you serious? thompson was mandatory long before povetkin and style wise thompson is a much more difficult fight for wlad

Thompson is a tall lefty with decent skills and decent power. Nothing killer but still can cause some problems.

Povetkin, imo, is a much easier fight for Wlad, he is small, open and will come right at Wlad.
I agree. povetkin is more talented than thompson but stylistically povetkin is an easier fight for wlad. povetkin is much easier to hit and doesnt have that southpaw stance

                      Few facts:
                      1. Challengers call out champs - WK does not need to call out anybody.
                      2. Povetkins team is in it for step-aside $ and for starting paper trail in case WK goes after another belt after TT. If this were to occur, it would then be easier for AP to ask to become Interim IFA belt-holder.
