Jake basically didn't throw a punch for 2 rounds, and Ray just hit him again and again and again and when it was obvious that Jake wasn't going anywhere and that Jake wasn't about to start throwing punches any time soon, the ref stopped the fight.

He was stumbling because he was hurt, La Motta had fought to 15 round decisions before and never had stamina problems. It doesn't make sense that he'd have nothing left in the tank after 12 rounds, he was badly hurt by Robinson and only his heart and guts were keeping him up.

If he didn't get hurt by the left hook combo at the begining of the round, there is no way that lost combo hurt him. Jake was simply trying to grab on, and stumbled forward in exhaustion.
