    Remember when James Toney said......

that Iran Barkley hit him harder than Hasim Rahman. Before he faced Peter, Rahman was suppousedly the hardest punching opponent that James has faced as a heavyweight. when asked about the punching power of rahman, toney said that iran barkley had hit him harder at 167

toney is known for his mouth and talking bs. whether that was real, or toney tried to downplay the whole heavyweights-cant-hurt-me scenario is under question, at least for me.

toney is known for a good chin and neither barkley or rahman put him down, unless he was serious why would he lie about that?

punching power is a beautiful thing but it's also complex. i remember watching katsidis fight czar amonsot, and at one point emanuel steward made an interesting coment. he said that these guys punched harder than some heavyweights. he was talking about lightweights!!!!! guys weighing 135. it imediately reminded me of what toney said about rahman. and even though it was at a different weight i still cant play that out in my mind.

i've heard comments like that on several other ocaasions. i aslo believed there were harder punchers at lower weight classes than heavies. But Rahman is known to be a hard and legit puncher eventhough he's slow. he's powerful

it's an interesting topic to me

before i didnt take james seriously but this statement keeps coming back to me

    thoughts??

He also said Merqui sosa hit him harder. Heavyweights hit hard but thats because of the weight behind their punch. A guy in lower weights will be faster and have more snap to their punch which will add that extra something that you will feel.

Toney could also be talking about the speed at which heavyweight punches are compared to a lower weight guy. He probably sees the heavyweight punches better than a guy in SM who is faster and can have time to react to it .

You got the guys who turn the lights out because they decieve your nervous system, like Pacquiao. That's what most lower weight punchers do.

Then you got the typical HW puncher who uses blunt force- like a Foreman or Shavers.

I think Manny values the guys who use speed and timing more than the hard hitters from nature.

do you believe that there are some dynamic punchers at lower weight classes that got more pop than guys above 200 pounds? barkley is not a devastating puncher, but he's got power. guys like julian jackson, hearns, mccllelan, whole bunch of others have one great punch.

tyson himself said that to him it looked like hearns punched harder than a heavyweight. assuming an average punching heavyweight

Not more pop, because that's physically impossible. What they do have is more speed and timing, which means that you can't physically prepare yourself to take a punch- you don't see them coming. It doesn't matter who you are when that kind of punch lands- you will fall.

I dont think Barkley hits harder than Rahman at all, no way could Barkley ko Lewis out cold like Rahman did, i mean i bet Barkley hits harder than Byrd, but idk about Rahman.

true, good timing, and great speed is what makes a good punch. when talking about rahman, he doesnt really have either a great speed or timing, just relies on the weight behind his punch to make a good impact.

a guy like tyson is an all around dangerous puncher. he had the weight, timing and speed. but a lot of heavier fighters are slower but have extra weight to make up for the punching difference

that's what was rolling in my head. considering the weight here, their meeting was at 167 that could have made the difference was toney's frame. at 230 and above toney looks more pudgy so he can absorb the slow punches better lol

to me rahman is slow as hell, but he does carry heavy hands. he looked quick in kali meehan fight though, and the connected punches were all pushing with force
