If he didn't want to get stopped then maybe he should have stepped it up and done something about it.
Like throw punches back? Oh wait, he did that...
The criteria for determining whether or not a fight should be stopped is whether or not a fighter can defend himself. It is not dependent on a fighter continuing to punch.
If that were the case then Andy Lee should have won a stoppage in the first four rounds because Vera was getting tagged with clean shots frequently and couldn't do a thing about it, not to mention Vera was stunned several times in the preceding round. The stoppage was arbitrary, I don't see how it's possible to see it any other way.
Andy Lee had not blocked slipped or even attempted to slip a punch in the preceding 60 seconds. He was getting caught with CLEAN FLUSH shots on his chin. He was VERY badly hurt.
He was moving round the ring and firing back jabds and straight lefts. He was defending himself, even if he was on shaky legs. If I got stopped like that as an amateur I would be pissed. This is PROFESSIONAL BOXING.
I felt that if the referee hadn't stopped it 20 seconds earlier when Lee staggered back from a right hand, then he shouldn't have stopped it when he did because Lee just landed his best left hand of the round.
