For Those Who Think Cotto Should Have to Continue Proving Himself to Get Mayweather
Collapse

To quote one of my posts from another thread:
I don't think Floyd categorizes himself as the welterweight champion. Everywhere he goes, he is addressed as the p4p best fighter in the world. Like Hopkins at light-heavy, he just happens to be at 147. He wants big fights against great fighters regardless of their ranking. Is Cotto considered a great fighter right now?
Is B-Hop fighting top light-heavyweight contenders or young deserviing 175lb title holders like Chad Dawson? No he just fought the Top 3 (at that time) P4P fighter in Winky Wright and is about to fight another Top P4P fighter in Joe Calzaghe who is like Ricky Hatton is moving up in weight to fight the champion.Comment

Floyd is a bronze medalist.Since when does a contender have to justify a title shot oppritunity. Genaro Hernandez was a solid champion. He was gonna get good money to fight Floyd Mayweather - a Silver medalist and hot prospect contender that HBO had an eye on.
Genaro thought that at 17-0, he would have too much experience for a young Mayweather and expose him for not being ready.
He was wrong. 9 years later, Floyd is still undefeated.Comment

At that point, I think it's pretty fair to say that Floyd was already an established fighter. At that point he just turned P4P #1, and was an undefeated champion across 3 weight divisions.Comment

Yes, Hopkins last 3 fights are against guys who were in the P4P at the time: Tarver, Wright, and now Calzaghe. Mayweather's last three are Baldomir (joke), Hatton (overrated and undersized), and DLH (washed up). That's a big difference. To make things worse, Hopkins is way past his prime and still fighting the best. Mayweather is in his prime and ducking the best. Fighting Cotto is not the same as Hopkins fighting Dawson. Cotto is an established star, whether Mayweather wants to acknowledge him or not.To quote one of my posts from another thread:

No one said he was. But he was the champion of his divison giving a title shot to a prospect who hadn't beaten anyone to earn the shot. But of course when Cotto establishes himself as clearly the #1 contender at welterweight, a two-division champion, he still has more to prove, right?
When Mayweather got his shot, he was nothing more than ESPN FNF fighter...
