James Toney is a shoulder-roll fighter and that's his exclusive defense as a matter of fact. You can argue that it's better than Floyd's cause he uses it tp counterpunch a lot and is successfull counterpunching off the roll. Mayweather rarely counterpunches beautifully like James does but Mayweather almost never gets hit when doing the shoulder-roll. James Toney's been hit so many times when he does the shoulder roll but again he throws back off it.

Great post! He also rolls punches very well so he doesn't take the full impact on most either. I think Dwiens also forgot that Mosley is a very good body puncher. Alot of the fighters he's faced say he's hit them harder to the body than he has to the head.Speed is his key and he had very good power at lightweight actually, he was 31-0 with 29 KO's I believe when he moved up but speed was still his main weapon, he had very good footwork and could punch at odd angles, combinations used to flow off of him like it was nothing.
Moving up and beating DLH was a very good achievement, he was the first one to actually beat DLH (I know about the Trinidad fight, but I had DLH winning, so did many people). It was a very, very good fight and I think he managed to stun DLH a few times with quick right hands. But we have to remember, he himself said he was a natural welterweight who had to drain himself to make lightweight.
About 154, he never should have moved up, plain and simple. Bottom line, Shane Mosley is one of the best fighters this decade.Comment

im talking about having an exciting style. what the general public perceives boring from Mayweather is his refusal to exchange for more than 3 punches. He gets in range, pops and backs out of danger causing his opponent to reset. You're telling me Mosley, Cotto, the Marquez Brothers cant do that? What do all of these dudes have in common? They arent exuberant or outspoken. If they were to fight as defensively as mayweather, they would as well known as Ivan Caldenron.I tried the shoulder roll and for me it noticed it worked wonders against taller guys and to take off their right hands. I think because they were left out of position more than shorter guys when I rolled correctly.
Anyways... NO
When I mean fight like Mayweather, I mean... fight like Mayweather, changing rhythm, variety of punches, his excellent bodywork, how he regularly takes away his opponents' best weapons, and how in the later rounds either they stop throwing or they get stopped. The tricks he uses on the inside and hte proficiency with which he uses them, his timing, his movement around the ring, his brain and so on... i am curious on who 2501 thinks COULD do that, because I dont see anyone and 2501 is mostly on point.
fighting is fighting not the shoulder roll.Comment

Mosley was indeed a very good body puncher, he used to train with Mexican fighters and I've heard he's gone to war with quite a few of them and learned his body punching from them.
Rolling with punches is actually a bad thing now because he always relied on rolling away from a right hand but since he has slowed down somewhat now, right hands are connecting more and more.Comment

So the correct statement is a lot of fighters could fight “more defensively”, not ”like Mayweather“, right?im talking about having an exciting style. what the general public perceives boring from Mayweather is his refusal to exchange for more than 3 punches. He gets in range, pops and backs out of danger causing his opponent to reset. You're telling me Mosley, Cotto, the Marquez Brothers cant do that? What do all of these dudes have in common? On that I would obviously agree.Comment

mayweather is primarily known as a defensive fighter. thats why i said, "like mayweather". i'll be honest, i really didnt completely read Dwein's post because I assumed it was a perception of Mosley that I've thought about before which is that Mosley has the ability to protect himself more but he fights as if he is invincible. Is that what you were trying to relay Dweiny?Comment

I could. In fact, on the ropes, I do.
The shoulder roll is not particular hard to do. What is hard about Floyd's style is the subtle little things he does to throw you off your game.
And the sharpness, coolness and smartness under fire.
I take it that when we talk about Floyd's style, we talk in general about the shoulder-roll defensive stuff!?
In that case, most good fighters can learn how to fight that way.

Idk what you mean (sorry, english not 1st language).
Mosley discards defense I agree, he has the physical ability to fight to not get hit, but it looks like he never trained to do so (maybe a father-son effect? Honestly I think Mosley does not fight smart, and not just in terms of defending or not, more like he seems to not be prepared for adjustments, and that's more his corner's fault) so I am sure he could choose anymore, probably quite early in his career. It takes years to change one's style, look at RJ finding some kind of defense after his reflexes slipped.
NOTE: In Winky 2 he definitely adjusted in between fightsComment

You obviously haven't seen prime Mosley, only this stiff as version he is at the moment, basically ever since he moved up and had to use weights. Mosley at lightweight was pretty unstoppable. I would say he would even give prime Duran a run for his money...the combo's he threw were beautiful.Comment
