Listen, the majority will favour Bernard Hopkins on here and talk about how he's going to spoil his way to victory, but then when Joe Calzaghe knocks him out everyone will be like "I told you Joe was gonna win, I knew all along" etc. That is the way it's always been on here.
Re-watched Calaghe-Lacy,Kessler

No majority. All the polls have favored Joe by about 65-35, 70-30Listen, the majority will favour Bernard Hopkins on here and talk about how he's going to spoil his way to victory, but then when Joe Calzaghe knocks him out everyone will be like "I told you Joe was gonna win, I knew all along" etc. That is the way it's always been on here.Comment

Like him or hate him the one thing that all fight fans should recognize in both his performance with Lacy and Kessler is how he fought the last two rounds in each fight.
Joe fought those rounds as if he was Isreal Vazquez against Marquez...it was almost as if he needed those rounds to win...pitching a shut out against Lacy and completely controlling Kessler and he was fighting like a mad man in there. (watch his fight with Charles Brewer same ****)
Gotta love that dont ya?
Hopkins, Jones...name me one fight where these guys ever laid it on the line...Joe is and always will be a guy who will give your moneys worth.Comment

I agree with you that I like how he puts it all on the line (its entertaining), but alot of people would take that as ******ity & not fighting smart. What if he got KO'd in one of those rounds, you won't be making those comments now. Also I believe every boxer lays it out on the line by jumping in the ring. RJJ & Jones especially, they have had battles in the ring and have been champions in diff weight classes, upcoming boxers gun for those two, they just win diff then Calzaghe.Comment

So after we get past the AGE OLD GIVEN that all fighters are warriors because they step into the squared circle lets talk some specifics...
Give me some fights where Jones really gave you that extra effort and the same goes for Bernard...
Lets take a look at a couple fights....
Jones vs. Hopkins-first off neither man really engaged the other and Roy was able to use his superior hand and foot speed to win close but easily on points...clearly trailing in the cards Bernard was resigned to fighting at his same old pace, a pace which clearly lead to losing. Sure Roy was a special special talent with enormous power for a middleweight so I wont harp to hard on this loss but there was clearly a lack of "putting your foot on the pedal"
Jones vs. Tarver 3-disgusting performance, paid $50 for this fight cuz Roy said he was finally interested. He fought without a heartbeat that night and truly robbed the paying boxing public of their money. Was he shot? Sure I think most would agree he was but did he at any point put up any sort of fight...not even close-one of the worst performances I have ever seen BTW.
Hopkins vs. Taylor 1-Taylor was able to win a ton of early rounds by simply letting his hands go-he was really landing anything noteworthy just throwing more punches then the other guy...well Taylor eventually gassed himself out and by about the 9th round was a gonner-he literally had nothing left...what did Bernard do...did he close the show? did he give it that Joe Calzaghe type effort we orginally were talking about? Nope...he never let it hang out with a young kid in front of him who was begging to be stopped-he put it in the judges hands and guess what-they gave it to the guy who put forth more effort. Funny listening to Hopkins talk about how he would knock out Taylor in the next fight...very poor performance down the stretch.
Hopkins vs. Eastman-this one should make any fan of the sport puke....Eastman was able to stay razor close in this fight the entire way without throwing any punches he literally did not throw any punches...so how was he able to keep it close? If Howard threw 8 punches a round Bernard threw 10 thats how....if you stare at Bernard he will stare back....for 12 rounds if he has too.
I dont mean to rag on either man, Roy is possibnly the best fighter of my era and Bernard is a sure fire hall of famer but I believe in my opinion that both men have lacked the killer instinct to finish on account of being so damn cautious....thats probably what makes them great but it does not make them MUST SEE tv...heck look at Jones vs. Trinidad...another classic example of a guy who was not willing to let it hang out to close the show-there wasnt even any danger in that one.
I certainly understand and agree with your point about Joe's end of the fight mentality as being somewhat ****** why give a fighter any sort of hope...but I was not talking about Joe from a tactical standpoint I was talking about Joe from a fight fans point of you-this is a man who is hated by a lot of folks here in the states...the way he closed the show against both Lacy and Kessler are reason not to hate but to embrace.Comment

Good post, I agree with everything you said.I gotta tell you, i am not sure why he is hated so much! I mean the guy does some unreal **** in the ring. he use angles as well as anyone i have seen. his infighting against both kess, and lacy (more so lacy) was great. i actually think that will help him a ton against bhop, and no one is really talking about joe's inside game, only bhops, but that is a big mistake. bhop wont bully joe around the ring, and will have his hands full inside more than he ever has b4. i think this is gong to be bhops biggest challenge minus jones! we all know joe has great speed, but he has much more! his chin is very sturdy, his foot work is superb as well which is rarely mentioned. all everyone ever says is he slaps, and his resume sucks. if he did not have the hand issues i think he would be a monster, and i don't see a reason 4 all the criticism! yes he has bad hands, but he still dominates his opponents easily. he comes with many different facets of the game, and is very smart in the ring. very smart. the more i see of him the more i feel bad for the haters looking past such a great boxer who has been dominant, and a great champion. he is not going to be around much longer, and i will enjoy all his final fights. i am not talking about resume ****, but his boxing! he is still undefeated since being professional. the guy flat out wins! he is very underrated, and his style and assets would be alot for anyone to handle!
Sometimes people only see the negative side of a fighter.Comment
