Ali would still be declared the greatest if he remained unbeaten , the losses didnt make Ali it was his whole being and career that made him great , Ali was never beaten in his prime which was pre banned from fighting days , he was not the quite the same after the 3 yr boxing exile , although his best opponets were later the guys that beat him would not have pre 70 when he was know as Cassius Clay .Exactly, do people say Ali was not the greatest because he lost to Frazier and Norton while still in his prime. Or is he respected more because he came back to figure out and beat those fighters afterwards?
People are so scared to lose their 0 because of what it does to their career afterwards these days (example Hatton) that it's keeping us from the best matchups.Comment

mayweather couldnt live in the same ring as duran at 135, nor at 147 with hearns or leonard. however, if they all were in their primes fighting today mayweather would still be undefeated cause he wouldnt fight them.Comment

So you think Ali was way past his prime when he fought Frazier less than 2 months after his 29th birthday?Ali would still be declared the greatest if he remained unbeaten , the losses didnt make Ali it was his whole being and career that made him great , Ali was never beaten in his prime which was pre banned from fighting days , he was not the quite the same after the 3 yr boxing exile , although his best opponets were later the guys that beat him would not have pre 70 when he was know as Cassius Clay .
BTW he declared himself the greatest very early on (much before he fought Liston,) it wasn't until many years later that people started to agree with him.Last edited by Jim Jeffries; 03-05-2008, 07:10 PM.Comment

I don't know if Mayweather "couldn't live" in the ring with Duran at 135.
But I agree that he couldn't with Leonard and Hearns at 147.
I don't think Floyd would have moved up to fight those guys if they were around today, he may have stayed and fought Duran, possible becoming one of the great lightweights in the process.Comment

Too bad Floyd didn't fight Mosley, when Floyd was at 130 and Shane was at 135, whoever's fault it was, before thinking he would have beaten Duran at lightweight.I don't know if Mayweather "couldn't live" in the ring with Duran at 135.

I never said I think Floyd would beat him. Just that he might have fought him at 135. Even if he did lose it, it could be a good fight and thus making Floyd a more respected fighter.

Yes I do think his best was pre 70 Gav he lost speed and athleticism when he came back his chin and durability was still there pre 70 he was just that good they were not tested , age is not the only parameter to do with when a fighter looses something .
Mayweather is declaring himself the greatest of his era so whats the difference , it wont be to later that the haters realize it , what are you saying he must get beat and revenge the loss to prove it , rubbish !Comment
