Where do you place Castillo compared to other Mexicans since 1990?

I think it is pretty unanimous that Chavez is #1 by most accounts. He won over 80 times before even really experiencing a life-and-death fight.

Morales, Barrera, Marquez are probably clustered around the 2-4 spots.

I'm curious if people think Castillo has done enough to be mentioned alongside Morales, Barrera and Marquez, or if some may even contend that he should be placed above.

Earlier in his career, he got stopped 4 times, but I have heard that all of them were by cuts (and I believe it... just take a look at his chin against Corrales, who is considered a lights out puncher).

He got his first real big break by beating and then defending his title with a draw against Stevie Johnston. Very good wins against a very slick boxer who was considered the biggest threat to Shane Mosley before he headed north.

Next, his two fights with Mayweather happened, when he will probably be forever remembered as the guy who came the closest to beating a prime Floyd Mayweather, and there are quite a few who can reasonably say that Castillo should have won the first fight (I do NOT want this thread to turn into a ****ing discussion about this, pick one of the trillion that have already been made to bump).

After a few tune-ups, he went on a big name spree, by beating Lazcano (who was a big win at lightweight), Casamayor, and Julio Diaz (considered a very hot prospect/contender).

Then his first fight with Diego Corrales. Absolutely earth-shattering. I might be the only one (I doubt it), but even though Castillo lost, I thought he walked away looking better from that fight than Corrales did. Castillo was winning the fight on the cards, in the momentum, and I think he was breaking Corrales's body down more than his was getting broken down.

2nd fight had the weight fiasco, and he showed that he had figured Corrales out, confirming my su****ions.

That's pretty much the end of his run as a prime fighter. He looked average at best against Reyes & Ngoudjo. He got destroyed by Hatton because he couldn't stand up straight without falling, and The Hitman did exactly what he needed to.

So, what do you all think? Do the accomplishment listed above put him in the same league as the Mexican Featherweight Trio? Above maybe? Or a few steps below? If you have him below, who do you place ahead of him in addition to Chavez, Morales, Barrera and Marquez?

Oh ****! I forgot Lopez too! How could I forget a guy who won belts in 2 weight classes and finished his career undefeated? Incredible.

I'm not overly knowledgable on Mexican fighters to be honest (it's probably not that hard to tell), so I am not deep on Zaragoza's career at all. I boxrec'd him, and saw that he had some ups and downs (ups like beating Carlos Zarate and downs like losing to a very green Jeff Fenech), but boxrec is a ****ty way to get your information on a fighter, so if you don't mind, can someone give me a little rundown on the good and bad parts of Daniel Zaragoza's career?

If he had the kind of star power that morales and marco had I sure he would have been mention in same breath back couple years ago but he didnt and because of that he will always be over looked. I would place castillo just a hair below marco, erik, jmm but i would say this even thou jmm is my favorite fighter if you remove marco and manny from his resume I would say castillo resume and accomplishments are better. jmm is excellent fighter but if he had never scored those two fights his career would forever be spoken about as a fighter that never reached his potential

Castillo is one of my favs and his reign at lightweight is impressive especially that stretch were he fought lazcano, casa, julio diaz, and corrales in span about or less than a year
talk about trying to clean out your division

one thing that is for sure castillo could never be placed ahead of chavez
everything castillo did that made him effective at lightweight chavez did it better and more
kind of like when you compare chavez to duran at lightweight everything julio could do duran did it better and more

He's not quite on the level of Erik Morales or Marco Antonio Barrera. I would roughly put him on the same level as Marquez. Marquez has a higher ceiling though.

I had Castillo losing to Johnston in their second bout, as well as dropping a razor thin decision to Joel Casamayor in their contest a few years back. He did enough to deserve the decision against Mayweather in their first bout, but Castillo never had that genuine signature win against a top opponent which made him special in my eyes.

He was one half of perhaps the greatest fight ever though. That alone will always give him a place in boxing history.

Castillo never won any big fight. He lost to Mayweather, even if the first fight is highly debatable. He lost to Corrales when he didn't cheat and he lost to Hatton.

I rate a win against Mayweather prety highly, therefore I put Castillo above Marquez but bellow Chavez, Barrera, Morales.
