All great fighters lose; because they are the ones who most consistently fight the best competition. See guys like MAB, EM, SRL, Duran, Evander,... Forget about guys like Roy Jones.
The bold is complete bull****. To prove my point SRL lost to Duran by not using his brain and doing what he was supposed to do. He let Duran get him off his game before they even stepped into the ring. SRL's other 2 losses he was well out of his prime fights that should have never happened. SRL fought the best competition like you said. The only person you can say he never fought that he should have was Aaron Pryor. With all those other names on his resume its ok that the fight didn't happen.

Rocky retired at the right time, I don't think he would've beaten the much younger and faster Patterson or the much bigger and stronger Liston.

Cleveland Williams, Ingemar Johansson, Eddie Machen and Nino Valdes would've all given him trouble as well.

I'd pick him over Williams, Johnansson, Machen and Patterson, haven't seen Valdes fight so I can't be sure about that one. A fight with Liston would have been unbelievable, toss up fight IMO.

Rocky in his prime would've probably beaten all of them except Liston and maybe Patterson but he was in his 30's when he retired.

I don't think he could be as effective with his physically and mentally demanding style at that age. He made a good decision when he retired.

I agree with you about the timing of his retirement, if I am not mistaken, Patterson was supposed to be his next opponent.

Yes he was. Patterson fought Archie Moore instead and beat Moore very impressively.

Hey, man. I read your post three times and I don't get your point, or why you claim to have proven it. If anything, I see your post as proving my point.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, fighters are considered great because they compete with other great fighters. It is how they compete in these toughest of fights that matters, not whether they actually win them all. That is why guys like Duran, SRL, MAB, etc are genuinely great fighters while so many others just go around telling the world that they are.

Sugar Ray Leonard, one of my favorite fighters all-time, fought and beat many great fighters, so he is without question a great fighter himself. He lost to Duran because Duran imposed his style and will on him. Duran was able to do this because he was also a great fighter. Even great fighters will lose if they fail to perform their best against other great fighters, and that is my general point. On the other hand, it doesn't take a special fighter to build up an undefeated record against a bunch of average joes. For whatever reason, a lot of fans are still mezmerized by an undefeated record though.
