Theres an old school myth that the stronger your forearms are, the harder you can clinch your fist, which adds power to your punch, and based on that myth, pavlik's forearms look extremely strong.
Kelly Pavlik New Training Technique

He's not hated at all. He has been fighting the best as a young man, unlike the likes of Cotto (sorry can't help it, i just can't stand the bastard) and about his power coming from his training, it's bull****. You can't work power, it's genetic, either you have it or not. You cannot teach Mallignagi to punch decent. Kelly's training is impressive but it will only help maintaining his explosion movements, not increasing his power. It's certainly not the source of his power, muscle´fibers are.Comment

Old Baseball players did this to increase power to hit more homeruns. Never seen a boxer do it but anytype of rotational work is good for a boxers core.
People sleep on baseball shape. In highschool we followed the same weightlifting days as the football team. Then had pure "skill days" with a lot of BP. You end up swinging a bat at least 500 times, add the force of hitting a baseball and a few misses. Your core gets strong as ever very quickly.Comment

one of the dumbest merchant comments of recent memory came after that first pavlik taylor fight.
merchant was referring to Pavlik being tough because he's from youngstown, but doing it completely out of context he comments
"muscle memory strikes again!"
i remember thinking "WTF?!?!" he probably couldnt come up with anything that dumb again if he triedComment

Damn that's kind of crazy, when I played Baseball we never lifted weights. Was it more of a lower body workout? I've heard different opinions, so both ways probably work. I remember listening to Brad Lidge at a baseball clinic and he talked about lifting weights but not too much, and he said a lot of the Latin guys hardly ever lifted weights.Old Baseball players did this to increase power to hit more homeruns. Anyways I wonder too if Pavlik was doing some switch hitting since he's ambidextrious (might be spelled wrong).Comment

A few guys that came out of our town went pro in Football and they gave a ton of money for a state of the art weight room for our school. We used that before the season started so kinda like "spring training" in the winter. We didnt lift that much through the season because we has so many games. But yeah we lifted like 4 times a week and ran on the 5th. We did a lot of compound lifts, Hangcleans, squats and benchpress. We did it all really, it was great for our team. Also in ohio the weather is really cold in the winter so we couldnt do anything outside so we just got into better shape indoors. I dont know why any player wouldnt, It really helps your power and durability. What did you guys do to get ready for the season?Damn that's kind of crazy, when I played Baseball we never lifted weights. Was it more of a lower body workout?
