Calzaghe will win this fight, but not by K.O
Calzaghe Vows To Ko Hopkins For Fans
Collapse

I wouldn't go that far, but I've got The Blow as the favourite, yeah. He's a euro bum he gna get EXPOWNED by Hopkins, Hopkins is a real fighter. Cal***gy just fites bums in WHALES. Overrated as hell mutha****a.
USA USA USA USA.
etc etc etc. lol.
To be fair I've sat down and thought objective about this fight, and the only reason to pick Hopkins must be blind patriotism. If Hopkins wins, it'll be the biggest shock in sports in my lifetime in my mind.
It just makes me laugh all these kids that watch two fights and think they have an opinion. So Calzaghe has NEVER been a power hitter?
(And even in his current weaker hitting form he still stunned Lacy in the first round).Comment

He lost his first fight because he just got out of prison and didn't have a long amerature career like most other fighters. He took almost 2 years off after that fight training in the gym and learning technique and the basics. Not because of weight. I'm sure his trainers said it would be great if you could get down to Middleweight, we think you'd fit in best at that weight class, just like EVERY OTHER BOXER is advised to do. I walk around 190 but I'm sure if I wanted to become a boxer they would tell me I should fight at 154 or 160. I'm sure Tommy Hearns could have fought at a much heavier weight too, but people realized he could utilize his size best at lower weight classes, and rightfully so. This is boxing, this is how it works. Some boxers obviously struggle to make weight and shouldn't be fighting in lower weight classes, hopkins is obviously NOT one of those people (like you said, he fought in that weight class for 16 years!).Hopkins has NEVER walked around at 160 since he started boxing. The only reason he starved and boiled his way down to MW is because he lost his first fight and realized that he wouldn't have a career otherwise. What did he weigh against Tarver, with a 28 in waist? 188? You honestly believe he hasn't been struggling to make weight at 160 for many years? Please.
You might have a bit of an argument if Hopkins blew up between fights or immediately after the weigh in, which has never been the case (for the record Hopkins weighed 181 against Tarver, Tarver weighed 187 on fight night). Even then, it wouldn't be so much of a argument against hopkins as it is with the system (the day before fight night weigh ins, etc.).
And yes, b-hop walks around at fighting weight all year round, he is known as a complete health freak and a machine when it comes to his training (there have been countless articles that have mentioned these facts, even when he's not scheduled to fight he's training at the gym and running miles every day, google it). Again, you cannot fault a man for being extremely well conditioned. It's like saying Marvin Hagler was a cheater because he worked out so much.
And besides, he didn't move up in weight to fight tarver until after he passed 40 years of age!Last edited by ИATAS; 01-30-2008, 02:04 PM.Comment

Just to play devils advocate, it seems alot of people haven't seen BHOP fight either. I hate that everyone thinks Calzaghe is going to win because he throws more punches. You obliviously don't know how BHOP has fought his whole career, he's defensie straight right hand counter pucher, who is 8 or 9 - 0 verse southpaws. BHOP has been hit with some nasty punches and has a super strong chin. He's not getting KO'd & neither is Joe either. I mean did manfrado sauce go down, he barley got hit with those millions of shots.I wouldn't go that far, but I've got The Blow as the favourite, yeah.

I really don't understand some people on this forum that put there fanaticism so much further out there then basic logic. I'm picking BHOP by UD, but I at least have the logic to say it will be a close fight & theres also a good chance Calzghe may win. Just cause you don't like BHOP's personality/ words, don't discredit his resume & fighting record. He ruled the MW div for years....and you guys say fighting smaller guys?? I guess tyson was the smaller guy for most of his career but look what he did.Comment

I'd be mildly surprised if he did, put it that way. I just hope he doesn't actually go in with that mindset - Joe's intermittent moments of red-haze bullishness haven't cost him in the past, but against Hopkins they could. Not that I can see any mistakes he might make getting him knocked out, but they could cost him a decision. He just needs to go in there and be the coolest-headed Joe Calzaghe possible. I even thought I sensed an edginess -- a slightly different edginess to Joe's usual, I mean -- about him against Kessler, but he got through that in stellar fashion. I just hope the event of his American debut doesn't phase him (if only a modicum, which can be all it takes sometimes).
****, though. I'm about due my first bet here. Anybody wanna go 1K against Calzaghe to beat Hopkins?Comment

Also, I never stated that Calzaghe WOULD KO Hopkins, just laughed at those saying he wouldn't.
When Calzaghe started his career he was known as a ****er, and even put Eubank down, something that impresses me. For some reason that power has dwindled away to the point where, in the Manfredo fight, he was hardly hitting the guy at all. With the move up in weight, might that power return? Who knows.
As for Hopkins, I know what he brings to the table. Calzaghe UD.Comment
