Calzaghe vows to down Hopkins for fans
by JP Lonergan, 28 January 2008
Joe Calzaghe says he will reward his loyal fans by defeating Bernard Hopkins in April’s super-bout in Las Vegas.
The Welshman takes on Hopkins in what will be a titanic light-heavyweight clash - that can be seen live on Setanta Sports - on April 19 and he is supremely confident that he will send Hopkins to the floor.
"I always go in prepared," said Calzaghe. "As long as the best Joe Calazaghe turns up, I don't care what he brings to the ring.
"He could bring a couple of his bodyguards into the ring and he's still going to get done."
After watching fellow Briton Ricky Hatton fighting in America last month, Calzaghe was drawn to the idea of fighting in America. Hatton had thousands of supporters in his corner in his defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr and Calzaghe hopes for the same when he tackles Hopkins later this year.
"Why do I want to go over there? The unbelievable support, the British fans making it all the way over there was awesome,” he added.
"The reception Ricky received in the fight was incredible. I want a piece of that.
"Watching Ricky fight in America made my mind up that I wanted a piece of the action. He got a tremendous reception from the British fans, the best fans in the world.
"I owe it to them and I owe it to myself. I am going out there to see my name in lights. I am going to be one of the few people to go out to America and do the business."
