I dont think that old phrase 'white hope' is relevant today :-)Amazing how ****** some people on this forum are. You really think this great white hope is better than a prime Roy Jones, Hopkins or James Toney? Well he does no agree with you! That is why he waited until these guys are washed up before he came out of hiding to fight in the US.
I think you are misinformed. Both Toney and Roy Jones were fighting in higher weight divisions when Calzaghe won the SMW title.
In addition, Hopkins was fighting middleweights and subsequently jumped to light heavweight, missing out SMW completely.
I think if you look at RJJ record, you will see that from 1997 (when Calzaghe won the title) to the fight before he fought Tarver the first time, he had 8 years of fighting inexperienced fighters, for which he received much criticism from the boxing press.
Hopkins on the other hand fought much smaller men.
Toney has already increased in weight to well over 190 lbs in Calzaghe's reign.Comment

joes the man now thats why every tom **** and harry have been calling him out they want the $$$ that a fight with him would provide
but befor i think the big names saw joe as a high risk apponant that couldnt bring enough cash to the table thats why they were pricing them selves out of a fight with himComment

Actually Hopkins starved himself from LHW down to MW after losing his first fight and stayed there fighting smaller men for 16 years before losing back to back fights to Jermain fricken Taylor, then he skips SMW (wonder why?) to fight a Tarver who'd lost 2 of his last 5 fights, then fights Winky whose best days were at 154, 10 lbs above where he'd ever fought before and had to headbutt his way to a win.
LOL @ someone starving themselves for 16 years!
The guy is in great shape, no fault in that. He walked around at middle weight all year long (no starving required). Everyone could fight at a heavier weight if they didn't work out as much. ****** comment.Comment

He's walked around at 160 for ever. The guy is a machine, works out 365 days a year.
This argument is ****** because 1). He doesn't starve himself to make weight, 2). it's boxing, EVERYONE fights at a lower weight class then what is ideal for their height/body type. You think Paul Williams really SHOULD be a WW? How about 95% of boxers that blow up after the weigh-inn? Hopkins never blew up after making weight, ever.Last edited by ИATAS; 01-30-2008, 11:57 AM.Comment

Hopkins has NEVER walked around at 160 since he started boxing. The only reason he starved and boiled his way down to MW is because he lost his first fight and realized that he wouldn't have a career otherwise. What did he weigh against Tarver, with a 28 in waist? 188? You honestly believe he hasn't been struggling to make weight at 160 for many years? Please. He's walked around at 160 for ever. The guy is a machine, works out 365 days a year.
