"Boxers Box Because of Money, Nothing Else"

I get the point you were trying to make saying 20-25 years ago that wasn't a problem but it was but it was less of a problem. That is because back in the day your skills made you the most money. If you wanted to be well paid back then you could only fight the best because people would only spend their hard earned on great fights. So fighters couldn't fight a bum and expect good money.Comment

sorry but i think they're smarter now...the business trys 2 milk the fighters money so karma is a mutha****a...Comment

boxing wouldn't a problem with so called the best fighting the best match ups if those fighter were the more money making fights instead fighters having only names making the most money.

Hopefully, we'll get even more of what's been happening this year which is more of the best fighting the best.Comment

I agree. I may have come across as saying it wasn't a problem at all back then but I know it was, it was just a much smaller problem than it is now because of the points you mentioned.

We could get that if companies like HBO would stop over paying or even paying complete bull**** fights. If fighters only got paid for fighting the so called best better fights would get made because that would be the only way a fighter could make really good money. That would also not allow promoters to try and make bull**** fights because they know it wouldn't be televised which would no exposure for their fighter or company.Comment

Don't forget Joe Louis donated alot of his purses to the war relief, so in reality he was fighting for free.
Also, Rocky fought Ivan Drago for free on Christmas.Comment

If the net were around in the early to mid 80s, holmes would have been crucified on message boards for not rematching spoon, weaver, and norton, giving up his wbc belt by not fighting greg page, never unifying against wba champs like tate, weaver, and dokes (i left out coetzee because that fight was at least signed i think at point before it fell apart), for defending his belt against guys with 15 or less pro fights 5 times in a 6 fight period, and then trying to tie rocky's record by fighting a light heavyweight.
Good comments. You can't truly say that Larry Holmes fought every contender. Not even close. You could have added Pinklon Thomas to your list. But he did find plenty of times to fight some of the worst stiffs in heavyweight title history. Fighters who couldn't beat Ray Austin.Comment

No doubt that's the main reason. But once they have the money, those that continue for something bigger, isn't about the money. A legacy. I think it was Pavlik that said something like, when your younger you dream about becoming a world champion. Once your at that point, what's next? Defend the belt? Begin a legacy? Or as Pacquiao recently said for his reason to fight Oscar and his reasons before then on why he beats up his opponents so good when you'd think he proved himself along time ago. He wants to leave behind something big now. He's already got the money and could careless about belts. It's about collecting skulls now to put on his resume. That's what people remember you for. He's onto something big, he knows it, it's time to end it off big. Let's hope he goes in the right directions.Comment
