I'll give another look into this...take myself for example. My last fight was in 2001 (I also fought an exhibition on a pro show in Montreal in 2002). I train boxers now. I will never make a comeback. But guess what? I still spar now more than most professional fighters. I know for a fact I have done more rounds of sparring this year than any of the guys I train. I am at 296 right now. I did 12 rounds with NABF cruiser champion Matt Godfrey two weeks ago. I get no money for sparring. I am not getting ready to fight. So why take abuse, risk my health, when I dont have to (atage 41)??? Because I love boxing, I love to box, and just cannot see NOT sparring if I am still able. I feel like a fighter when I am sparring... thats what I am accustomed to and that's what I like. It's definitely a part of me now and will be until I leave this earth. And I guarantee you that when I am in my 60's and I see guys sparring in the gym... I will feel very anxious and sad that I wont be able to be a part of it

That would also not allow promoters to try and make bull**** fights because they know it wouldn't be televised which would no exposure for their fighter or company.
Amazing they havent tapped into more WARD-GATTI type fights... slightly lesser known or revered guys but ones who will go ALL OUT every time out to give a great show.

Good to have you back man! Good post, I didn't know all of that history.

He was so close to matching Rocky's record until he lost those controversial decisions to Spinks.

Money is a big part but it isn't the only reason. A lot of fighters are born into the sport and it's a way of life.

What an awesome thing to be really good at! There must be a sense of bliss knowing that you could kick pretty much anyone's ass when you are a top level boxer..

It's because the head of HBO boxing doesn't know much about boxing, he picks fights mainly by name recognition of the fighters which was why Mosley vs Mayorga was going to be on PPV.

He said why else would you want to get beat up or something to that effect, now i was just wondering yall's opinions on that, especially those that love to hate on fighters such as Floyd and Oscar.

I think its pretty much true, though im sure most guys want to truly be the best because theyre competitors at heart, if money wasnt involved, how many guys would really go out there and take a beating for fun. His statement just made me think, because people act like the old fighters were just fighting to fight but this guy had a different outlook.

Another thing, it said that Cooney and Holmes both made 10mill a piece for their fight, i just thought that was astounding, especially for that time.

Ofcause boxers fight for money..! When you're from the ****** you don't fight because it feels good to be hit 500 times in one night..! I do, however, think that after some boxers earn a bunch of money, things like pride take over..! You have to protect your ego as a boxer otherwise you'll get run over by critics and fans

It's fair, they should get money for risking their health. What I hate is fighters that only think as businessmen. Where're the fighters that want a legacy, getting to the point of being compared to others ALT?
