"Boxers Box Because of Money, Nothing Else"

I was watching the behind the glory on Larry Holmes, and one of his sparring partners/friends (i cant think of the guys name but he sparred with Frazier,Ali,...etc) made that statement, i dont have the exact quote, but he said if a boxer tells you different, they're lying. He said why else would you want to get beat up or something to that effect, now i was just wondering yall's opinions on that, especially those that love to hate on fighters such as Floyd and Oscar.

I think its pretty much true, though im sure most guys want to truly be the best because theyre competitors at heart, if money wasnt involved, how many guys would really go out there and take a beating for fun. His statement just made me think, because people act like the old fighters were just fighting to fight but this guy had a different outlook.

Another thing, it said that Cooney and Holmes both made 10mill a piece for their fight, i just thought that was astounding, especially for that time.

I'd say that's true for the present day fighters, more and more of them look for the biggest money fight with the least risk, it wasn't like this 20-25 years ago.

**** like that happened back in the old days too.

it's just may appear to be more prevelant now with the internet and now and we hear about more offers and "calling out" and junk like that.

if the internet was around in older times, people would find ways to diminish fighters and say they ducked so and so and a certain guy was overrated and whatnot.

But that was my point, Holmes was champ in the early eighties and thats who the guy was talking about. I think lots of people say fighters today are all about money because stuff like that comes to light through websites and tv, but it seems like fighters were just the same back then but they get a pass.

if the internet was around in the early to mid 80s, holmes would be getting bashed as much or even more than floyd and calzaghe are today.

Of course thats true, thats why you won't see Mayweather step up his game and fight boxers who have a good chance at beating him. Unless you're one of those ppl who actually believe Floyd was stepping up when he fought Hatton, when he clearly was stepping down. Stepping up would be taking on fighters like Mosley, Cotto, Williams. Those are probably the three top fighters in his weight class, no he goes for the safe-bet and fights Oscar again...

Holmes always fought the best, it's just that the best at the time ******. Holmes always struck me as a fighter who wanted to make his own legacy more than look for the fight with the most money involved.

ya because winning world championships from 130-154 obviously means youre not stepping up and taking on bigger challenges.

Oh i consider Holmes one of the greatest fighters ever, Im not questioning anything about him, the sparring partner that made that quote was not degrading him, he was saying thats true for all boxers, i dont see a problem with it
