    Cool stories behind boxers' nicknames

I bet I learn a TON about this, because I haven't studied many boxers' nicknames.

Here are the ones I know, and only one is actually pretty cool:

"Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Referencing the bankrobber, even though he has no resemblence to it. It is just because he has such good defense and always came out... pretty. Not really that cool.

Paul "The Punisher" Williams - Literally... this guy just picked a nickname with P that sounded good. Probably the lamest thing ever.

Giuseppe Berardinelli "Joey Maxim" - He just went by his nickname. He took his name from the Maxim gun, the world's first self-acting machine gun. And the reason he took it (or someone gave it to him) is because he always threw so damn many left jabs, that it seemed like he was a left jab machine gun, because it was frequent. Now that is a sweet nickname.

    Any other cool ones?

The reference to Floyd about coming out pretty being not cool probably means we enjoy different types of fighters. Youre probably more of Arturo Gatti type fights where I can sit back and enjoy more techical aspects. I actually like both, but more than anything I like to see smart boxing, nice thread, keep up the good work.

Lol, my favorite fighters are Floyd Mayweather Jr., Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright. I do enjoy defense and slick boxers.

I just thought the story behind the nickname was kind of lame. I mean, it makes sense, but it isn't anything that strikes me as ridiculously clever, especially since Pretty Boy Floyd (the bankrobber) was just known as that because he had a baby face. The boxer's nickname and the robber's nickname have no similarities, which takes a lot away from it.

DLH got called the Golden Boy because it was said everything he was involved in made money.

Whitaker wanted his nickname to be Sweet Pete but some people in the audience for one of his fights misheard it as Sweet Pea.

SRR got his nickname from a guy that saw him in the amateurs when someone saw him fight and said he fought sweet as sugar.

I thought Oscar's had to do with his gold medal? I'm not sure.

Sugar Ray Leonard called Robinson and asked if it was okay to use it, he said yes.

Ricky "the Hitman" Hatton got his name from Brett "The Hitman" Hart because he used to wear pink spandex trunks.

Both Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko have PhDs. Wladimir in Sports Science and Vitali in Sports Medicine and Philosphy, that's why they get introduced as Doctor.
