Julian Jackson of course. That power bailed him out of plenty of fights.
Best slugger of all-time?

Find someone with a better record than Gomez' against solid competition and I'll change my pick, but really 32 wins, 32 Ko's is something that no one will ever do against good opponents.Comment

I remember Jackson being beaten to a pulp by Herol Graham, his corner had the towel ready, then WHAM a haymaker from nowhere hit Graham spot on the jaw, in slow motion you can see he's asleep imediately, if any fight could be used as an example of a puncher's chance it was that oneWhich fighter who relied on his power to win him his fights had the best career?
I'm talking about guys who won by knockout, or (rarely) won a decision because his opponent was so intimidated by him that he didn't even try to win rounds, he just tried to survive.
Julian Jackson is an example... or Ricardo Mayorga.

You know who else knocked almost everyone out? Shane Mosley at lightweight... but he was far from a slugger.
You said Gomez was well-skilled, which would make him... not a slugger.Comment

You're right, you can't just go by KO percentages. Ruben Olivares won almost all of his first 60 fights by KO, but he was a master boxer who also had excellent power. Fighters like Julian Jackson and Miranda come in the ring looking only to take you out. They are dedicated sluggers.Comment

Ever notice how boring a straight out slugger looks against a master boxer.
If the knockout comes in the first couple rounds they are exciting as hell, but a good defensive fighter makes a slugger look pedestrian.
The slugger becomes plodding and gets hit more and more, and makes for a supremely dull fight always coming forward and never getting that one big punch.Comment

I guess the definition of a slugger is a guy who wants to win as much as everyone else, but doesn't even try to win rounds. He tries to knock you out... if he doesn't, then he hopes he has done enough damage to win a decision.
Mayorga was still trying to KO Forrest in the 12th round, even though Vernon was fresh (relatively speaking), and pretty much everyone had Mayorga winning at that point.Comment

Take Gomez as #1 KO artist then. That was my doubt early on if by slugger you meant the one who knocks everyone out but is skilled or a ****er who relies almost exclusively on power.Comment

On a much lower level, you could use the Andre Dirrell-Curtis Stevens fight as an example of that.Ever notice how boring a straight out slugger looks against a master boxer.

Nah, power only.
Gomez was a stud though... I learned about him when I asked if Erik Morales was the best 122 pounder ever.Comment
