What happened to this Jeff Lacy?

Three things, one more an observation than anything else.

3. Most importantly, Lacy climbed in with Calzaghe as the slight favourite but climbed out realising that he was completely out classed and not even in the same league as the top fighter in his division, therefore it destroyed his confidence.

I couldnt have said that better myself. Same thing happened to John the beast Mugabi after he fought Marvin Hagler.

That would be nice to see that Jeff Lacy again. It seems like the loss to Joe and the shoulder injury have affected him. He didn't look to good against Manfredo who I thought would destroy, but he was coming off a big layoff and he definitely looked rusty. Maybe he'll show more in his next fights.
