I can't remember the time frame of when Louis beat up his mistress and choked her in an argument. He talks about it in his autobiography and says he might have killed her if someone did not intervene.
His womanizing was throughout his boxing career. I don't know if that counts as a dark side but I'm sure his wife Martha did not like it. I gues that's just being a man with opportunities, most of us would be similar. It was described in a documentary about Louis as his way of rebelling against the way he was basically programmed to act in public. At least, to the best of our knowledge, Joe did not dress up in fishnets like some fighters.
It comes as no surprise to me when many fighters have dark sides, especially violent ones, given the fact that their careers and livelihoods are based on being violent.
