He can be, every guy with a little better stand-up skills can be a real good MMA fight if he puts money and time in take down and submission defense training.
Because there aren't many guys that can throw punches.
But Floyd needs years of work to get that level of submission defense, otherwise he will get mauled by guys like Urijah Faber.
Also, it depends if his body can hold up.Last edited by Sudo; 12-23-2007, 11:20 AM.Comment

Why is that funny? I never understand that logic coming from people...doesn't even make sense
Think about what MMA is....its essentially the sport of fighting...its the center point...all styles allowed. MMA evolved because of early "no rules" fighting tournaments(UFC 1, 2 Etc...) involving guys coming from backgrounds in Brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, karate, kung fu...etc..
Asking a MMA fighter to crossover to boxing is essentially asking a wrestler...jiujitsu guy to compete in boxing. Thats retarted...its like having Lennox Lewis take on Randy Couture in a pure wrestling match. He would get mauled. Just like it would be retarted to have Randy Couture fight Lennox Lewis in a boxing match....Couture would get killed.
Theres a reason why boxers can cross over into MMA and why MMA fighters can't cross over into boxing. Its the same reason why MMA fighters can't cross over into another disciplines like Karate. You can't ask Randy Couture to compete in Karate, it doesn't make any sense...he would get killed in a high level Karate tournament. BUT you can have a guy who is a black belt in karate like Lyoto Machida compete in MMA(Top 10 LWH).Comment

I doubt we will see a big name boxer in his prime enter MMA, the money is very poor, a top name boxer can make much, much more boxing than trying MMA. What is more likely to happen is a big boxing promoter will relise they can get the top MMA fighters to box the top boxers because the MMA guy would make much more money boxing than they do fighting MMA. And it would probably be a huge sell on PPV. It is win/win, the MMA guy finally makes some real money, a top ten boxer would make good money and get an easy bout, the promoter would make a killing. Imagine 'Rampage' boxing a top ten boxer. And Liddell also. They would get killed, but it would draw a huge crowd, boxing fans and MMA fans. I actually wish a top promoter would put it together.
Thats a ridiculous idea that would never happen.
I'm curious what state athletic commission is going to approve Rampage or Liddell to box a top ten boxer without a single professional boxing fight.Comment

Your point is moot, boxers cannot crossover from boxing to MMA as easily as you say. The fight most of the time end up on the floor and Mayweather needs training not for defense from takedowns but he needs to learn how to make someone submit and take another down. The necassary training to fight at the high level in MMA is quite a bit. Mayweather will need to learn a whole new set of skills that defy his boxing training. This will be extremely hard to do as his boxing skills have become motor functions and his boxing training has been "imprinted" into his muscle memory. Why is that funny? I never understand that logic coming from people...doesn't even make sense

Floyd is still reletively young but he needs to learn quite a bit about punching on the ground and kicking. He needs to learn basic takedown techniques and submissive moves. He has the obvious advantage standing and would beat everyone standing unless he gets caught with a kick which he will also need to learn to defend from.
Point is, he has a hell of alot to learn and will need to be 100% dedicated to MMa if he wants limited success with it let alone against a top MMA fighter.
I actually hate MMA fighting but i see the skill set that some have to learn and the amount of stamina they need even if they are just fighting 3 rounds, i still think Boxers take more punishment, hit harder and it is much harder to become a top level boxer than a top level MMA fighter. I also stand by my arguement that boxers need more stamina to fight 12 rounds of boxing than to fight on the floor. Still I repect people like Fedor for training in the various Martial arts that he does.Comment

Pointless really. A man like Lidell would get taken out within the 1st round. The skill level of top boxers is just much to high, I would just want to see it for the sake of watching the hopes of MMA fans dying as their favourite fighter was taken out by a single punch within the 1st minute. I wouldn't watch Mayweather fight in MMA just because I know against a ELITE level MMA fighter he would get mauled.I doubt we will see a big name boxer in his prime enter MMA, the money is very poor, a top name boxer can make much, much more boxing than trying MMA.
