Is the Cotto plan to break Mayweather down???

If they fight that is. Everyone has tried this bullying type of strategy against Mayweather. It hasn't really worked or been smart because I believe one of Floyd's strenghts is fighting right in the pocket where you can't catch him with a long range punch.

Miguel is a bettering body puncher but, I don't think he'll be effective with it. This is because Floyd positioning is contorted in a way where you can not cleanly get to the body. One of Cotto's money punches is the left hook to the body. And Floyd knows it and will look to check hook him with the left hand as he comes in.

I think the "breaking him down" strategy won't work. Because Miguel is not as good as jumping on you as much as Hatton is.

To me for him to have a chance. He's gonna have to work completely behind his best asset the left jab.

Yeah I feel the same way. Floyd was able to counter with the check hook when Hatton was jumping in with wide punches. If Cotto lunges in with a straight jab, it'll be a lot harder for Floyd to counter. He just needs to make sure he sets everything up with his jab.

It has to be a mixture of his last two fights. He has to have the same intensity of the Judah fight, but he needs to be as polished as he was in the Mosely fight.

yeah odlh showed that the jab can be effective against pbf, and cotto is not shy of using his jab so it should be a great weapon for him!

Cotto's reach is to short, he will get countered with the right hand all night if he tried to jab. Watch the bout and you will see that Cotto's jab won['t be as effective as you originally thought it would be.

He needs to jab, use more of his decent (underrated) movement. And brawl on the inside when it goes there. Cut off the ring well, like he did in the beginning of the Mosley fight. Then, he needs to MAKE SURE to finish WAY stronger. Use more head movement then he has recently aswell. Since, from his earlier fights, I feel he actually has it in him to do so.

Did you watch the Tyson vid in te training section on why being short isnt a disadvantage?

He said that how short your reach is means nothing, it's all about timing. And as Tyson would say Cotto's got impeccable timing.

And unlike some guys Cotto uses every inch of his reach, and he steps into his jab like you are supposed to. The reach isnt as muc of a problem against FLoyd. It will be against the big three (Cintron, Marg, Williams).

I know this but Floyd incorporates speed AND timing. That's why his counter right is so potent. He is going to counter Cotto's jab all night long, Cotto has to cut off the ring to really have a chance at victory and force Floyd to fight nonstop because if Floyd has time to think, it is going to be a long night.

Furthermore, if you have what some seem to think is a disadvantage, you are supposed to further it in boxing. If you're short, you go lower. Makes him have to reach more.

You're tall, stay tall. Don't let him reach you as well.

With arms, you're to get closer when you have shorter arms. You can swing full range, but still have short punches and still have a great impact. Your timing is essential and you can place them better than a rangey fighter can, USUALLY, on the inside.

If you're a long-armed fighter, you should keep someone at range and jab them to all hell.

This is the typical "idea" for a fighter.

One thing you'll know if you've ever boxed before is even if the jab doesn't connect it is still a great weapon. Mayweather is not going to counter right everytime Cotto throws a jab. Even if Cotto miss's with jabs its gonna open mayweather to get hit with other shots. Cotto just needs to stay very active, throw diff shots, including his jab.
