But PBF is young. Many fighters at a young age have impressive records and then. When he gets older it might show how good he really is. The great fighters normally can do it when they are into the mid thirties. Shows there class.
Can Floyd Be The Best Fighter Ever

he is a top 20 ish guy now 4 me, but he would have to beat cotto and williams to crack my top 15 atg's. i am not sure he has enough time left to be #1 atg, or enough challengers for that matter.Comment

So he doesn't knock many out, so what?
he started at 130 i believe, was knocking alot of people out at that weight.
who the greatest ever is subjective, some say willie pep, SRR, Ali etc etc.
I honestly think he is the greatest of our era.
I think he could beat Tito, SRL, duran and every other great welterweight of the last 20 or 30 years.
I think he would even beat SRR as silly as it sounds he just has the style to beat him and would nullify SRRs power.Comment

PBF thinks hes better than SRR and Ali and he should be satisfied with that if he actually thinks it. When he is retired he wont be in that category. On the basis of beating Cotto, i cant see him stepping up to middleweight.
People right now arent raving about PBF in that class, so it aint going to suddenly happen when he is retired. PBF said he will only be appreciated when his gone. Maybe that will be true.Comment

i think u make some good points i think Floyd seems to think if beats Cotto & retires undefeated being a 5 weight world champion he will aquire the status of best fighter that ever lived ,lmaoPBF thinks hes better than SRR and Ali and he should be satisfied with that if he actually thinks it. In terms of indvidual skill, there is an arguement,Can Floyd Be The Best Fighter Ever does he have the oponents in his era to make him the best fighter ever, does he poccess the ability to be claimed the best fighter ever ,what steps should he take to be seen as the best fighter Ever who should he fight etc what achievmanets would win him such an accolaid
i was just watching PBF Soul of a Champion & he said he thought he was the best fighter ever ,i personally disagree but what in your eyes would cement that theory that he is the best fighter ever
excuse the spelling etc
In terms of who he was has beat, no, other era of boxing have had strongert and better fighters,
For me personally, the one fighter i can see beating floyd is paul williams perhaps, mayweather can be beat and like all fighters he probably will be beat.
He is my favorite fighter, but someone who sets up shots with a good jab has a real chance against floyd mayweather, the best thing about floyd though is the single shots he throws, which make his attacks hard to read because he doesnt aimlessley throw lots of punches which can be picked off and countered, he throws one shot after another, which gives the opponent less time to counter and less chance of reading his attacks.
This is why he does so well, he can score points at will with a variety of single shots leaving opponents little chance to counter or adapt to him.Last edited by Technical_Skill; 12-19-2007, 09:22 AM.Comment

I honestly think the only thing holding him back from ever being considered a top ten all time great is his competition. There simply isn't enough competition on his level to show how great he really could be.
As someone already mentioned, his best fight and biggest name was against an old De La Hoya, who was a shadow of his former days as a great fighter himself, and that is the only thing holding him back for me.
All the fighters in the top ten and twenty of the pound for pound lists had other fighters who were also 'all time greats' to fight and that is what makes them the best ever. They beat fighters who were not labeled 'B' or 'C' class fighters and who no one gave any hope of winning to, but they were going up against not only the best champions of that specific time but were going up against some of the best champions of various weight classes to ever step in the ring. That is the true sign of how good a fighter is. They're not beating good champs, they are beating and fighting other champs who are also considered to be some of the best ever to lace up a pair of gloves!
We are talking about the best ever here! We haven't yet seen Floyd fight someone who he went in against after being a champion who was an honest threat to him with skills, talent and a record as good as his. Thats what you have to do to be considered an ATG. There must be a genuine threat of losing to someone that is also an ATG and when you can overcome that and come out on top then there is no doubt about it.
In my opinion, even if he beat Cotto and Williams whom I think he could beat with relative ease, he still won't have faced someone else who will be remembered in another twenty or thirty years time as being a magnificently skilled fighter who tore through all his opponents and was in his prime and gave him a really hard fought battle in which it was debatable who was more skilled or a better fighter but he still somehow managed to come out on top.
He has been, in a way, lucky to have been in an era that doesn't have a very deep pool of talent. The WW division is arguably up there with the best at the moment but even so it doesn't have any fighters who are downright amazingly skillful and who will be remembered for all time. It has some pretty good sluggers and brawlers but even then they aren't greatly skilled at that...Hatton is a good example (though he fights more at JWW).
Take other eras for example. When you look at really great fighters they tend to come from really great eras. Some recent eras full of amazing talent would be the early nineties middleweights. They had not just one guy with the skill of Mayweather but at least five in the same division (give or take a few pounds depending what stage they were at)!!! Or what about the great eighties? You had a guy like Leonard climbing through the ranks being haled as the next great American poster-boy fighter. He proved it by going up against some fighters who were as good as him and definite threats. He beat Benitez, then went up against the lightweight king Duran (who was already considered an ATG and had faced and beaten HOF'ers and ATG lightweight fighters Buchanan and De Jesus among others) who beat him, but then was beaten in the rematch! Or what about when he faced Hearns who had been tearing everyone up in the WW division! He was thoroughly out-boxed for the whole fight until the famous words "You're blowin' it son" by Dundee at which point he was able to get TKO!
That is a very small example of two eras full of great talent in which many people that are as good as Mayweather fought each other and it is very difficult to say who was really the better because they all beat many great fighters and was very little between them. It is very unfortunate that Mayweather doesn't have someone or a bunch of fighters that are great to fight. If he were five years older he could've been fighting DLH, Mosely, Wright, Forrest etc or ten years older and much bigger he could've been fighting Toney, Jones, Nunn, Hopkins, McCallum, Graham, Jackson etc etc. but of course he isn't....

i agree and i will say mayweather will never be considered as the best boxer ever untill he does some amazing things in the ring so far he hasnt beating hatton dosnt quite compare to what the greats have acheaved during there carears i think to but him in the same sentance a robinson pep lenard duran etc is ******Hey.. you have to realize that he's being compared to guys like Robinson.. Pep.. Hagler.. Ali..
it's sounds like a lot, because it should be.
It's not just 3 big fights and you're up there. You have to be GREAT. Not look great a couple of times.
People act as if being considered ATG is just something anyone at the top level can become. It's not.
all of the greats have fought everyone floyd hasnt its a case of good but no cigar so far for floydComment

People you can't fight whats not there. PBF has all time great skills, smarts and ability but he does not have all time great competition. Thats not PBF's fault that those around him do not have all time great abililty. So I say no he can't be the best fighter ever. But I will say this no matter what era you put PBF in he would be one of the best fighters in that era.
Also people saying he hasn't won certain fights in spectacular fashion I don't understand. Since when has a fighter facing another very good fighter supposed to be a blowout. Ali-Frazier series weren't blowouts, Leonard-Hearns series weren't blowouts. That **** don't make sense. When you step up your competition the fight is supposed to be close and that is what makes the winner great because he beat his biggest threats. So I don't understand people downgrading PBF's performances against his so called toughest fights. He won and thats all that matters. You supposed to beat and possibly blowout fighters beneath you in terms of skill, smarts and ability and he has done that.Comment
