Killed him my ass. Hopkins has one of the best defenses I've ever seen, it's tight, not to mention his chin. I would say Echols hits harder than Calzaghe, not to mention the obvious, Roy Jones Jr. The Tito-Hopkins would have given a Calzaghe a hellova fight...especially Hopkins prior to Tito. People think Hopkins kept getting better with age after Tito, but it's b.s. Just because someone loses doesn't mean they are still in their prime.

That said, I could still favor Cal Prime vs. Prime, but not by much. Hopkins defense is so tight, his countering is good, and his inside rough housing that was brilliant in his younger days, could effect Calzaghe, especially since Joe doesn't have great technique and can miss a lot. Miss a lot against Hopkins and he will tear you apart.

I actually didn't think to highly of Cal until he beat Lacy and then Kesser. I'm sorry, but there were to many fights I saw with him on Showtime that didn't impress me at all. Lacy and Kessler Wins impressed me, even though I didn't think much of Lacy either, but Kessler was a good fighter, and I like the fact Joe finally stepped up because I've always thought he stayed at SMW because he wanted no part of a prime Roy Jones Jr.

And yes, I do think it doesn't look good for Hopkins that he didn't move up a while ago, specifically after his big MONEY fight against Oscar.

It would have been easier to call it a duck if Joe had come to the States earlier and called out Hopkins, trying to make the fight here, leaving no excuse for Bernard.

Hopkins wasn't chasing Jones Jr. either...that was all hype.

Why is it that, after losing twice in a row to Taylor at middleweight, Hopkins skipped super-middle to fight a 37 year old Tarver, who had lost 2 of his last 5, at light-heavy?

Hopkins saw easy-pickings in Tarver, which is what he was looking for, someone his age and someone with lower risk. Like I said, Hopkins was on the decline for many years and picked his fights carefully, going after big reward, low risk, like Oscar.

Hopkins never moved up before because Roy (back then) ran the LH division, who Hopkins could never beat, and SMW, well, nobody really gives two ****s about the division when it comes to history, at least not then. Setting a legacy at MW cements you in history, that's what Hopkins wanted, along with big paydays.

Ask yourself what's the point of Joe fighting a 76 year old man that has lost to a younger fighter twice?

          Why go after Hopkins?

To get his name out there? OK, good reason, but one would think if he wanted to do that he would have been over here years ago trying to do that with Jones Jr.

Calzaghe has had some "strange" decisions go his way on his home turf. So, to assume that Hopkins doubled the money (if in fact that's EXACTLY how it went) for a way out, as apposed to making this worth his while a bit more, is strange to me.

He would have traveled, he would have moved up, he was the bigger name and he would have had less pull at the time. He deserved more money than I'm sure they offered him.

Unless, you guys just wanna trust Frank Warrens word over common sense. That's fine with me, too.

i agree, at no point should the man who knocked out trinidad and held all middleweight belts be forced out the country moving up to fight someone who was then an unknown european.
