Eating Your Own Words is Never Tasty

By TK Stewart - I was one of the ones that had it all figured out. I had it down as a sure thing that Manchester, England’s own Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton was going to beat “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, Jr. into submission on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

I was one of the ones drinking the Kool-Aid mixed up the Manchester faithful and I was gulping down every mug of it. I couldn’t be wrong (or so I figured) as I’ve been on a good run lately and I can’t remember the last time I was wrong about the outcome of a big fight. I pegged Kelly Pavlik by knockout over Jermain Taylor and I said that Joe Calzaghe was a sure bet over Mikkel Kessler.

But hey, I wasn’t the only one telling you all that Hatton was going to win. There were thousands that made the trek across the pond from England to cheer on “Our Boy Ricky” and as they sang “Walking in a Hatton Wonderland” I was singing right along with them. They bet thousands of pounds on Hatton at the parlors in Vegas. In fact, the amount wagered on Hatton was the most for any British fighter in boxing history. And truth be told, about 20% of us so-called expert boxing writers were picking Hatton to win too. [details]

I've only just read the first bit, but I don't think that Floyd should be considered so far head-and-shoulders above, in that victory. Hatton was all over him, roughing him up, and making Floyd look as bad as we've ever seen him at different points. I think anyone who picked Hatton should be proud.

Hatton may have been able to win against Mayweather if Floyd never saw him coming. That's the one thing that seriously concerned me going in. Floyd had to be able to come up with a few moves and added tricks to deal with Hatton knowing 100% what Ricky would do for 12 full rounds with months to prepare and an explicit HBO docudrama to bring it all to life..

Now, if somebody picked Baldomir or someone like that over Floyd - that's a different story..

The greats prove the doubters wrong and reach levels and do things even their fans didn't think they could do. The taste of conformation tastes oh so good.

Seriously though, skils - nobody felt 100% Floyd couldn't win - let's be real for a second.. HaHA. There wasn't much doubt, just a concern about Floyd dealing with pressure fighting and specific **** like that.

I wanted Hatton to win, but I knew that Mayweather would be too good for him especially at 147, I can't say there wasn't a little doubt there that Mayweather would lose. In the end my mind was right and my heart wasn't.

Many hoped for Mayweather opponents to win just for records sake, and I think it will be good for boxing that any boxer should not stay undefeated; but after his fight with Hatton, like many fans, I begin to like "Pretty Boy". Now, the only thing to get rid of "Money" is for him to retire and this is not bad news because that will keep him from not winning more and more. Let other boxers earn for their living.

Mayweather eventually outclassed Hatton, perhaps not all the way through the fight, but in the last 3 rounds he was in a totally different league. He took it to a level Hatton had never been before, or had any hope of reaching. Hatton tried his best and deserves due praise for that but he won't convince me, and many others, of his status as the best British light-welter until he finally fights Junior Witter.

Thats cos Hatton was punch drunk from Cortez giving Floyd the perfect position to nail him. He caught Hatton coming in every time. Floyd didn't have to sustain as many blows becuse reffy kept splitting them up.
