    Enjoyed the fight but....

Just watched taylor pavlik cuz i was at school and my pops deleted the fight off the tivo, so i got it from the vids section on this site. My observations: obviously taylor is one of the most athletically gifted fighters going, great speed and power. But taylor doesnt even try to defend himself, and it seems like he loses to most decent fighters with power. imo a terrible waste of talent because he is only half a fighter. Pavlik didnt impress me talent wise, i think he is a good fighter with great heart and power but imo he is too slow to ever be great. i was amazed by how he was able to survive that brutal onslought in round 2, which did make me a Pavlik fan. I will deff watch the rematch on the comupter or at a party but im not paying 50$ to see an incomplete taylor and a good fighter in pavlik who is too slow to really impress me. maybe pavlik isnt that slow and taylor is just a freak, but that would just make taylor all the more dissapointing in my eyes. what are your thoughts?

Couldn't agree more. Taylor lost that fight more than Pavlik won it. If Taylor was mentally tough at all, Pavlik is done in that 2nd or 3rd round. There's a huge gap in talent there. I just don't see anything skillfull about Pavlik who walks forward and eats punches hoping he outlasts the other guy. I don't know if Taylor wins a rematch because he doesn't obey corners or live up to his potential, but the fact that he almost had Pavlik out in round 2 means he SHOULD have won and SHOULD win a rematch, but like you said, he's only 1/2 a fighter.

thanks for the reply, i guess this fight illustrates more than anything the mental toughness and boxing iq needed to be a great fighter. taylor hit pavlik with everything he had and couldnt take him out, like the hbo guys said, that would affect most fighters mentally, but a mentally tough fighter wouldnt let it get to him. in terms of boxing iq, you are right, it looks like taylor is either very stubborn, or just not intelligent enough to put what his corner teaches him into practice. everyone has a gameplan until they get hit.
does this fight warrant a ppv in your opinion? i think by todays standards it does, just because that fight was so exiting, but we arent going to see great boxing unless taylors new trainer can really connect with him.

taylor is his worst own enemy. he had everything he needed to defeat pavlik but didnt make it connect together. he is ovbiously the better boxer/fighter which is why i think he has a great chance of beating pavlik again, but that can only happen of taylor allows himself to be great.

in your opinion, is it because he is stubborn or he just doesnt have the boxing iq to be great? i watched both of the bhop fights but i havent seen taylor all that much. imo opinion mental toughness and intelligence play such a huge role, and it looks like taylor just doesnt have it. look at zab and floyd, pretty similar in terms of sheer athletic ability, zab is even more fluid imo, just comes down to the mental game.

he doesnt have the IQ to be great because he is stubborn if that makes any sense at all. he hasnt developed as a boxer mentally resulting in bad decisions in the ring. the fact that he wont listen to his corner doesnt help. It almost seemed that he started to believe all the criticism he had been getting after that 2nd round. as if he knew he was beat already and was hoping for something to bail him out or a big mistake on Pavlik's part. If Jermaine ever got in "the zone", he would be incredible.
