Even in the more so called civilized sports like Golf it happens, remember the 1999 Ryder Cup, when the British anthem was played the Americans fans were chanting 'USA, USA'. Then when Monty had a chance to level they heckled him throughout and even ran across the green.
My point being that in high brow sporting occasions a tribal mentality takes over.

good point, Nick Faldo's hotel phone was ringing non stop during the night just to up set him, plus fire alarms in the early morning getting every one out of the hotel, not very sporting.
