I was commenting as much on the general lyrics of rap songs as on that song you put up. The Eagles writing a bad tune (lyric wise) doesn't change the fact.

Why are you acting ignorant (hence, I don't think you are). That's a scapegoat. Of course most mainstream rap isn't an art because it isn't controlled by ARTISTS. The essence of hip hop comes from mainly Jamaican dance music and disco where inner city artists and DJs threw parties by chanting over looped samples. It evolved into a culture that included Graffiti writing, break dancing, emceeing, and the other elements. The earliest hip hop artists were poets. I suggest you dig up some KRS One and Rakim, or listen to vintage Nas, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and the related. Please don't be ignorant and cast a blanket over an entire sub-culture. It is very diverse with genres within the genre and nit picking mainstream radio does no good to prove your point.

Art, in general, isn't controlled by artists anymore. Like everything else it is now seen as a simple commodity for certain groups to exploit and get money out of. I'm not talking about Hip-Hop as such. Purely mainstream rap like 50 cent and Eminem etc. The roots of these styles are genuine art and comes from a need of expression, generally how most art comes into existence. The early Hip-Hop artists were brilliant and yes, I have listened to much of what you suggested.

I am not being ignorant nor am I casting an umbrella term of the whole sub-culture, hence, the reason I used the word 'mainstream' rap.

Not really, apart from what I wrote above. I never really got into the Eagles although I think my dad listened to them a bit. Either way, they are also dreadful lyrics. No form of creative expression is free of terrible work. I think some, in my opinion, just attract more bad work or less talent.
