Definite legend and although he beat many bums he beat a lot of great fighters and didn't suffer a knockdown or loss until his 91st bout I think at which time he was 32 which is very old for a lighter fighter. Heavyweights generally peak around 28-32 years but the lighter fighters are generally past it by then.

So it's a ridiculous question he is one of the greatest of all time and had he met any of the fighters that beat him when he was 26-28 he could and maybe would have beat them all.

He went 93 fights before finally losing, to a fighter he beat by KO in an IMMEDIATE rematch. One of the only modern fighters to have NEAR 115 fights, 107(86)-6(4)-2.

          He fought/beat fighters like..
Roger Mayweather (Beat TWICE, one by KO)
          Kostya Tszyu (Lost while FADED)
Oscar De La Hoya (See Tszyu)
Miguel Angel Gonzalez (DRAW while FADED)
          Rocky Lockridge (BEAT)
          Edwin Rosario (BEAT)
Angel Hernandez (BEAT, gave him 1st LOSS)
Pernell Whitaker (DRAW, on Whitakers BEST night)
Jose Luis Ramirez (BEAT another modern fighter with 100 plus fights)
          Joey Gamache (BEAT)
          Meldrick Taylor (BEAT, "TWICE")
Hector Camacho (BEAT, giving Camacho his 2nd loss)

Even if the rest of his names are bums, some are decent, some are not, that's an impressive resume.

Countless Fight Of The Year candidates, a few wins. Was and is one of the best JUNIOR WELTERWEIGHTS of all time. (He and Aaron Pryor are tied for first place, in my book)

So to answer your question, yes.

He didn't beat Pernell, it was an official draw, though he clearly lost. He beat Meldrick Taylor(who you probably don't even know about), Edwin Rosario, Hector Camacho, Jose Luis Ramirez, Greg Haugen, Roger Mayweather twice, Rocky Lockridge, Juan Laporte, etc.

Just a good Mexican fighter? LMAO.

Not quite as bad as a:

Was Ali really that great? I mean he only really beat George Foreman and doesn't he just make grills? thread.

Okay not nearly as bad, but pretty bad nonetheless.

What does it matter if a guy fights some bums in the amatuers or he is entertaining enough to make money fighting the same guys? I mean if he has over 100 fights and beats a lot of really big names along the way.

dam skippy, you got it perfect. what's wrong with this guy? you are asking if chavez sr was a legend? ****in newbie. his first fight with meldrick taylor cemented him into the meaning of a true legend and is widley known as the best mexican boxer. his losses came later in his career when he was past his prime. hey lil guy mabe you should start buying fighters whole career sets onb dvd. then mabe you can figure out who's a legend, and who is not.

and i've heard a lot of people say he fought bums, you're right but those fights were tune-up fights, he stayed active and fought at least once a month. normal fighters train a good 3-4 months before a bout, chavez just stayed active and continously fought.

chavez is a legend but lets not kid ourselves about the 1st taylor fight. he was being soundly beaten by taylor, and got lucky with a punch in the final 15 seconds. the referee clearly should of allowed taylor to finish the fight. aside from that of course he is a great fighter and deserves to be mentioned alongside the modern greats
