If you only had Whitaker winning by one round you don't know how to score boxing. The best it could've been for Chavez was 8-4 Whitaker.

I voted Whitaker/Chavez, but that was absurd.

He did try fighting back, he just couldn't find Floyd. His style was to stalk him and hurt him for the later rounds, which is what he said he was gonna do, but Floyd never gave him a chance to hurt him. He couldn't fight back or counter because Floyd was too quick.

I'm sure he was thinking about his personal problems during the fight, getting sidetracked, LOL.

corrales was all heart in the ring. he'd fight his heart out no matter the circumstances or how far behind he was.

My line of thinking is fairly in line with the rest of you. Whitaker beat a much scarier opponent, Mayweather never gave Chico a chance...but...

Also, I had Whitaker winning by a round, while Mayweather TKO'd Corrales. That is def. more impressive. Also, JCC had a padded record of nobodies in Mexico. Maybe 10 of his 80 some fights were against non-cab drivers.
I'm glad someone else didn't see an absolutely through outclassing by Whitaker like everyone else did. I thought Whitaker was winning the rounds, but I didn't think he was dominating the **** out of them.
I mean really? You'd be hard pressed to find more than 3 rounds that Chavez won...and winning them clearly is a whole different matter all together. You guys gave him some charity rounds huh?

SEE what I'm saying, he DID have a padded record, he fought his fair share of good opponents but people can see through the numbers that make his record and pinpoint just how many good fighters he's faced, Cotto with a fraction of the overall fights he's just about up there with Chavez in number of good guys he faced, he started from his 10th professional bout fighting good guys like Justin Jukko up to Mosley, Chavez was fighting cans when he was 31-0, don't get me wrong he was an all time great but not enough people realize this.. 100
Everybody knows that Chavez was essentially fighting amateurs, unknowns and part time fighters early in his career. You aren't revealing some golden secret here.

That was the nature of the fight game for many of the great Latin American champions of that day. Look at the careers of Alexis Arguello, the great Ruben Olivares, Carlos Zarate, and even Roberto Duran to an extent. Arguello had north of 35 fights before taking on a notable opponent. Zarate and Olivares both took awhile to fight the best of their time.

By the time Chavez fought Whitaker, he had that spectacular 80something and 0 record and he had beaten fighters like:

              Taylor
              Lockridge
              Martinez
              Castillo
              La Porte
              Rosario
              Ramirez
              Camacho
              Haugen

That is an excellent group of fighters among a long list of solid opponents he beat during his undefeated run as champion.

Now Miguel Cotto is my dude...probably my favorite fighter today seeing how Toney and Morales are no longer relevant. He has had a GREAT career so far and he has beaten a lot of capable fighters, including a great fighter in Mosley. HIS RECORD TO THIS POINT IS NOWHERE NEAR CHAVEZ' LEADING UP TO THAT WHITAKER FIGHT. Not even close yet. Knock off 40 something wins on Julio's record before he brutalized Mario Martinez and it's still not close. Cotto still has a long way to go to get on that level.

Guess he didn't realize that there was second page on the boxrec page for Chavez.
hahahaaa. That was good. "OMG Chavez beat Mario Martinez in his 4th pro fight!!!!!!!!!" nice catch.

Mayweather beat the hell out of Corrales that night. That was on some Whitaker/Haugen type **** where their opponents were scared to throw by the end of the fight.

Every time I want to watch a clinic I go back and watch those fights.

Maybe I just suck ass at scoring... I didn't see Whitaker dominate Chavez, nor did I see Mayweather crush Genaro Hernandez... that looked a lot closer to me than everyone seems to think it was.

I didn't actually sit there and try to score Whitaker-Chavez like a judge, but I was watching and trying to keep a mental tally of who was getting the best of it... obviously it was Whitaker, but not by much in my estimation, and that's not to say that he didn't win a lot of the rounds, but he didn't totally spoil Chavez's gameplan like everyone seems to make it out to be.
