I agree with this, except for the "mass appeal" correlation. Floyd's appeal is strictly to the boxing public and for reasons peculiar to Floyd and his career. He is no Ali...ie....having "mass appeal"...ie....being a household name.

Correction, mass appeal as in the boxing community and slightly, just slightly outside of the boxing community. The HipHop community also knows about Floyd. His popularity outside of the boxing circles exists but slightly.

Ali being as popular as he was has also to do with the time he was fighting in. Refusing to go to Vietnam also helped him popularity. Changing his name from Clay to Ali helped his popularity.

Ali was bigger then boxing at that time. Nobody can top that in the present....trash talk or not trash talk.
