I was just wondering if anyone could help me convince my parents to let me become an amateur boxer? Every time I bring the subject up they always say no.
Convincing parents

You've come to the right place...
Understandably, no parent wants to lose their only begotten son to some chump in the ring.
You may have to drag your mom and dad to the gym to watch you spar.
If your sparring partner wipes the ring with your sorry ass, I guess you can't blame their apprehension to letting you partake in a sport that demands blood, sweat, and tears.
On the other hand, if you can pull this off...

They just may have a change of heart.
If not, I would respect their concerns and stick to ring tossing or double dutch.
Good luck

Give them the old "you are my parents and you should support me in whatever I want to do" speech.Comment

Explain to them that, most of the time, the sport doesnt even involve contact. 95% of what your doing is learning self discipline and learning to control your body. The other part which does involve the contact can be rough, but serious and long lasting injury is much more prevalent in other sports. I think boxing is about 8th on the list of most dangerous sports. I mean, just make sure you dont try to jump into too fast, or not give it the time and discipline it deserves, or you could get hurt. The hours you put in at the gym are hours that you arent getting in trouble. They are hours where you are learning about yourself and what you are capable of doing, even when it is tough. It will help to build character, self respect, dignity, and self worth. If you tell them this, and they still dont let you, just do what sugar ray robinson did, and hide it from them and fight under a different name.Last edited by mrrupo; 11-25-2007, 04:47 PM.Comment

that's the last thing you want to say. Just tell them its something you like and its something that can keep you busy and out of trouble. but really just tell them its something you really love and really want to do it. explain the headgear and the trainers around and how everything is safety oriented.Comment
