You can partially blame his handlers for "rushing" him along too quickly at such a young age.

Who else was there to fight at 154? Trinidad had already stated that he was fighting only a few fights at 154 to pick up a belt and move up to middleweight. The plan all along was eventually to keep moving up to chase a fight with Roy. For the Vargas team it was their only opportunity really to take on Trinidad. And With Vargas's pride and ****** machismo he wanted to prove that he was a "real Mexican" by going toe to toe with Cheato. He basically wanted to win that fight badly so he could throw it in his rivals face (i.e. Oscar). It was a cash out fight because at the time Fernando was facing some serious assault charges and his promotion team thought he might be going away for some time.

It was kind of like when David Reid fought Trinidad. With his bad eye they knew it was a cash out fight although Reid wasn't ready for that big of a step up in competition that early on in his career.
