Was Cotto More Than You Expected?

I started on this subject in another thread. When we look at all the material written on Miguel Cotto over the last period, and all the posts and threads here on this forum, it's hard to imagine anyone may have been underwhelmed with the performance he put on last saturday against Shane Mosley.

Did Cotto give you more than you expected? And how/what, exactly?

Yes he's a better boxer than I thought. He tightened up a good bit, his jab was better and didn't leave him open. He proved he could box going backwards. He wasted no movement but always moved.

      I'm damn impressed

Nope. I was actually disappointed in Cotto. I was eagerly anticipating an epic display of body punching.

I could say the same thing with that.. HaHa.

Sorta leads us to another point doesn't it?

But was not Cotto much FASTER and more dynamic than expected?

NOBODY was talking that type of performance. Nobody.

It was all the typical line about how Cotto would wear him down with bodypunching, ect. Same old story.

There's was ZERO talk of Cotto out-Boxing, out-counterpunching, ect.

His speed was very good no matter how much anyone will try to say Shane made him look fast..

          Let's be realistic about this.

Yeah he did, his handspeed was decent and comparable with Shanes and somehow he now he has developed greater punch resistance I didn't even know that was possible. Before the fight I kind of had him on the same level as Hatton, I'm a big Hatton fan but now i'm not sure. Cotto is excellent, I was impressed.

yes...his jab is what has most impressed me. its powerful and against judah when he used it it landed a lot, and against mosley he used it much more and landed a lot too. that gives him a great advantage on offense and defense. also he was very fast and quick against mosley imo....he was very well prepared.

I posted this in another thread but it's more appropriate here:

I think cotto fans were definately suprised also.

I was really impressed by cotto's ability to box and how smooth his right hand looked. His right hand supprised me.This guy truly rose to the occasion. He has proven to me that he is a better all round fighter than tito trinidad. Cotto is a great fighter. In terms of overall skill he reminded me a little of Roberto Duran. He is great for boxing.

Also , in watching the fight again shane didn't look as bad as I thought he did. Although he's not as explosive as he once was he wasn't completely shot.

On another note. I know that often times a fighter's ability to take a punch increases after moving up in weight, but cotto's chin level has climbed incredibly. I don't think I have ever seen a fighter get as hurt as cotto had in previous fights, only to take the puches he took on saturday night. This leads me to believe one of 2 things.

                    1. And what I think is most likely the case, after 4 fights at 147 cotto has officially settled down at 147.

                    2. Or, correct me if I am wrong, but was it me or did the weigh in occur a little earlier than usual. Miguel could have benefitted greatly by an added 3 to 4 hours to recuperate for the fight. Being that Miguel is naturally bigger than the average welterweight, such a scenerio stands to benefit him more. If you look at both shane and miguel at the weigh-in and then saw them during the fight, cotto appeared to have filled out alot more than shane did. Not only could the added weigh have affected his chin, it also could have affected his overall strength.

For the record I don't actually believe this, but I just wanted to put that out there
