Based on hatred, honestly. He's a guy who would've never made it in this sport the real way, took the easy way out and got a foot in the door via a reality TV show. Couple that with the fact that his only claim to fame is beating a shot Arturo Gatti (who was never that good in his prime anyway), and a record of 18-3-2.

I just dislike Alfonso because he's never paid his dues. He's not a real fighter IMO because he never struggled and paid his dues on ESPN and worked his ass off to get a title shot. He beat a bunch of bums, got lucky and got over.

Gomez was flash knocked down once early in his career, i dont remember aginst who...

come on, this thread is obviously made to make fun of gomez.....he would have close to no chance against margarito, cotto, williams, shane or floyd at 147.....i would give him a big chance against berto and judah, though...and ill give him a chance aganst cintron...

people usually hate gomez and think hes just an avarage club fighter...even though he has very good amateur background and only one considered definitive loss against manfredo jr and manfredo is much bigger and alfonso beat him once too....alfonos real record should be 19-1-3 (8 KO's), because he got robbed vs feliciano and if the referee had not deducted a point from him against ishe smith without even one warning, that fight wouldve and shouldve been a draw...

Check his record on boxrec. He fought Ishe Smith in his second fight. The guy that Cintron is supposed to fight now Jesse Feliciano he fought him twice. He's fought Manfredo at 160 twice. He fought Ben Tackie. He fought Ahmed Kadour at 160. The Gatti people wanted him anyway. What Gomez has shown besides being skilled, smart and a bit fast is that he has a big heart too.

I don't see how people just assume Gomez is some dumb unskilled boxer. When he doesn't BREAK HIS HAND, he's accurate, quick, has a decent ammount of pop and doesn't tire. He fought guys much bigger than him. MUCH bigger, and he held his own. He essentially faught a super-middleweight, when his ideal weight is 140. That's 28 pounds. (I realize he technically gave up less, but when you get down to it, your body is as big as it will ever be. He gave up a huge advantage in size, any way you cut it) If you underestimate that, you're not looking at the bigger picture. People assume just because he was on The Contender, that he's some joke. He's not.

As much as I dislike Peter Manfredo, I think he could have continued in the Calzaghe fight, and could have shown more of his skills.. because he's not a completely skill-less fighter. It would have further proved Gomez' own skills.

In this fight.. I actually go with Gomez. I thnk he can beat Marge based on his movement, quicker hands, and solid stamina and chin. Marge has all the things that Gomez has, except the speed and lateral movement. I see that making the difference. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out the other way, with Margaritos workrate, but Gomez can throw alot of quick combos, like in the early parts of the Tackie fight. Marge isn't that much faste r than Ben, to be honest, he's just more fresh. Close fight, either way.

You know what's also funny. People thought the same of Juan Diaz earlier in his career. If you look at their styles they are very similar, throw in there Glenn Johnson too. Of course, Juan Diaz is the fastest, most skilled, best stamina etc. but there is a strong connection among those guys in terms of how they fight and who they are as fighters.

              What about Roy Jones?

Didn't he essentially ride his silver medal to a fat paycheck on HBO? Gomez, I heard, didn't get paid for his first fight.. Compared to the thousands Jones recieved for his first bout. Bit of a double-standard, don't ya think?

I see your point about Gomez, but I don't think he has the power, or enough boxing and defense to stand up to the top welterweights. He's good but he needs to improve his boxing ability because tis hard to increase power. I don't feel he has an edge in either department, at least nothing beyond a tiny edge, not enough to get a W.
