Don't get me wrong i love boxing and i love a HBO telecast as much as anyone i just think merchant is a terrible commentator. You guys are saying he is synonymous with boxing and thats exactly the reason i think you guys like him not cuz of his abilities, in any other sport he wouldnt have a job. Also i did read that thread which is what inspired me to writ this thread. Boxing fans are overwhelmingly partial to anything merchant does when in reality they are just used to him and associate him with great fights they have seen.

I think you're takin it to seriously.. the dudes funny as hell.. at least once you acquire a taste for the **** he says. But actually, hes had a long carreer in sports.. he was sports editor for the baltimor sun at a very young age actually.

Like I said in another thread Larry Merchant has both good and bad qualities. I'm just starting to find him more and more annoying though. Kellerman isn't that bad its just that most of yall love Merchant because he has been around so long not because he is just that good. As far as sports commentating goes Larry Merchant isn't not even in the same league as Howard Cossell. Larry Merchant isn't synonymous with boxing to me I think of Michael Buffer and his famous saying before I think of Larry Merchant. The dudes on showtime are better than the HBO cast. Well at least I think Al Bernstein and Trev Albert are better than Lampley(worst of them all) and Merchant. Just my opinion.

I don't like what Merchant says to some fighters after fights and how he can discredit a boxing match if it isn't exciting enough. That being said he has been commentating longer than I have been born it would just be wrong for me to say I want him fired. That man is synonymous with boxing.
