Why can't every ref be like Steve Smoger?

Hatton should ask for Smoger to ref his fight with Mayweather.
holding is illegal, punching is not. punching while tied up is only illegal if the ref tells you both to stop OR youre the one that is holding. Taylor was the one primarily initiating the clinches while Pavlik was trying to punch him off.

and part of me doesnt even care how 'textbook' the refs are, when youre touchy about the rules, it takes away from the fight. as long as its not something blatant like headbutting and big low blows and excessive holding and all. I hate it when refs get iffy about low blows and break the fighters immediately after they grab just a little...Clinch breaking makes the fight sooooooo much worse to me.

I thought Pavlik was so close to being stopped...if he would have been caught on the ropes when he started turning away, I would have been screaming for him to be counted out.
Honestly, I thought Smoger did a near perfect job. it wasnt flawless, but no refs are almost ever going to be.

I agree that the ref shouldn't take away from the fight, and he should allow the fighers to punch out, but he should also try and keep it things even. Dont allow one fighter to have an unfair advantage...besides their own skills. There wasn't too much clinching in this fight, but when they did clinch Pavlik would not punch out, he would hit Taylor while holding, sometimes to the back of the head. If the ref does nothing, Taylor should do the same, which he did some times.

I only saw frank capuccino in gatti vs ward 1, but he seems not to be a friend of quick stoppage. My favorite ref is kenny bayless
