Arthur Mercante gave Diosbelys Hurtado the benefit of the doubt against Pernell Whitaker.
That was one of the most brutal barrages on the ropes ever.
Whitaker probably landed ten winded up left hands flush.

No ref in his right mind would've stopped it so prematurely.

      That's why there's an 8 count.

Does NJ have a standing 8? I don't think they were fighting with those rules...

i disagree. I think a good amount of refs would of stopped it. Not after the first knockdown but when Taylor started hitting him after it. When Pavlik got hit in the head nearly fell and turned his back. I think a lot of refs would of stepped in at that point. NOT all of the refs..just the really good ones would of kept it going. And Smoger kept it going.

Yup, as soon as the bolded part of your statement happened, I was screaming at the TV for the ref to stop it. Kelly didn't have his legs under him, he was stumbling, and he looked to be pretty defenseless. I think 90% of the refs out there would've stopped it. Hell, I would've stopped it.

Exactly. It's a fine line here folks. For every comeback victory like Pavlik enjoyed there's 100 examples of unnecessary beatings and life threatening injuries.

I agree, I love Smoger as a ref and not only for the way he handles knockdowns and stoppages. One thing I noticed during Saturday’s fight is that when he was starting to break the fighters from a clinch, the fighters started punching out of it, and instead of forcing the ‘break’ he jumped out of the way and let the action continue…

IMO, Smoger’s the best referee in boxing right now….

he really is the best..and i hope he ref's Cotto/Mosley. Its 2 bad he only works in the states, because he would be a perfect ref for Calzaghe/Kessler.

I didn't like Smogers performance in this fight, when the fighters were clinched, Pavlik would hit Taylor and Smoger would allow it. Smoger would instead caution Taylor. But I also think Taylor should retaliate, when the ref doesn't intervene, which he did a few times, after he saw that Smoger wouldn't do anything.

Hatton should ask for Smoger to ref his fight with Mayweather.
