No. Wlad never had the Ring belt. Lewis vacated. A vacated Ring belt can only be awarded in a #1 vs. #2 or #1 vs. #3 when both are beltholders. For instance, Calzaghe got the Ring only after beating Lacy; before that there never was a Ring champ at 168.
Wlad will rightfully get the Ring if he beats Chagaev, by the Ring's rules that should qualify. Now Wlad is #1 with Chagaev #3
I assumed that's because Wlad was #1 and Sanders was #3. I don't actually know, I just know The Ring belt's formula is pretty sweet.
The ring magazine is a company that will just extend the GBP brand. Ted Turner to Rupert Murdoch have all sought to diversify there brand and this is a good thing for boxing. Ring Magazine and it's staff will be independent of GBP as the companyy will be held in a trust. I doubt journalistic integrity will go out the window.I can see how how this appears to most people but in all reality it's not that serious. Fox Film arm still pushes ******* and progressive films even though the broadcasting arm is conservative.
In doing so, Fox is actually broadening its revenue sources. How would GBP be increasing its revenue by highlighting and featuring (or highly ranking) other fighters in the magazine?
A conflict of interest doesn't only mean avoiding improprieties... IT IS ABOUT AVOIDING THE APPEARANCE OF IMPROPRIETIES.
switchsouthpaw - The ring magazine is a company that will just extend the GBP brand.
This is TERRIBLE for boxing. This is nothing like what Ted Turner or Murdoch do. Golden Boy buying all of the biggest magazines that critique, review and analyze the sport is an massive conflict of interest.
Do you really think a writer who may get a scoop on some scandal involving De La Hoya, the company or a Golden Boy fighter will actually print it and risk his job, not that it matters because it will never make it past the editor?
Do you really think if Golden Boy has a pay-per-view, a Ring writer will do a negative article on the card and telling people to not buy the show, again it will never make print?
Why would Golden Boy buy a magazine that has been losing money for the last few years?
NO matter what the magazine does next, every time a fighter from a rival promoter gets the shaft in any way or a Golden Boy fighter is praised or elevated in any way, there will always be accusations of Golden Boy and De La Hoya pulling the strings behind it.
Look that is a valid argument however the company itself has been steadily losing money the last few years. As a publication the company hadn't been profitable. But under the GBP brand this magazine which has been a boxing institution for many years may experience a resurgence. That is great for the sport of boxing it terms of expanding it's dwindling fan base. Everyone on this sight is here because they are hardcore fans but boxing prior to PPV was accessible to the casual fan and it created fan base. Now Oscar as well know can sell tickets well if his name helps to sell magazines and gets more kids involved in the sport overall the sport can see it's popularity rise as it did the Sugar Ray days. You see the impact in ratings for the Contender just having Leonard involved sells advertising and that is good for the sport. I can see your points about integrity being called into question and I agree there is a chance that may happen but it's still premature to say it will definitely happen.
GP will increase it's brand awareness and extend it's portfolio it's makes good business sense to get into publication. Whether or not it has a negative impact on the sport remains to be seen. I am an optimist and I hope for the best. Oscar seems to be doing the right things for the sport he really has kept the sport alive on his back. He is popular and just as the NBA marketed itself using Michael Jordan's image so should boxing. After Oscar there really isn't a huge star out there. I think Miguel Cotto will always have a huge fan base and one or two more great fights with him they will be chanting Tito who? But for right now his name will garner attention to the sport and that is a great asset. As far as the comparison between Turner-Murdoch and Oscar generating revenue the magazine itself will be valued at higher price point. The value of the magazine and the company will go up exponentially on Oscars name alone much like a stock offering from a big company. Be patient only time will tell whether or not this will be a boxing negative or positive.
Why would I care about GB's portfolio and making their brand bigger? I care about the sport, not a promoter making more money and lining their pockets. We as the fans get robbed every month with these bull**** PPVs that clean us out. The main reason why UFC and MMA is killing the comp with PPV sales, these lackluster PPVs.
Every person I spoke with today implied that they will be canceling their subscriptions based on De La Hoya buying the magazine and I am one of them. It is now tainted every way you look at it.
You made several of my points, Oscar making money, Golden Boy making money. They won't make money with writers being critical of their shows and telling people not to buy. They have the power to fire, replace and even block content. Of course the average fan will NEVER know what content gets blocked.
And GB will have first grabs on the ad space available. If Showtime has a card going head to head with a Golden Boy PPV, dollars to donuts they will offer the big magazine ad spots to their own show before helping another promoter gets more buys over them. It's about them getting bigger and making money...remember?
The following questions still remain.

And I still say based on the thousands of posts all over the internet.
NO matter what the magazine does next, every time a fighter from a rival promoter gets the shaft in any way or a Golden Boy fighter is praised or elevated in any way, there will always be accusations of Golden Boy and De La Hoya pulling the strings behind it.
Well i don't think its good or bad for boxing its just business, the ring is the no1 boxing magazine globally and its bought by boxing fans, and these fans will know if its being biased or not which would effect sales, and thats bad business.
