Didn't Tunney spend most of his career at light Heavyweight?
Rocky Marciano fought alot of cans

I'd say Tunney's legacy is questioned mostly because he is considered to have retired early with something like only 2 defenses of the World Title. Still, how do you encore two straight dominating wins over Dempsey? He also made a ****load of money for the second Dempsey fight.
-Tunney was also the only fighter to stop uber slick Tommy Gibbons in like over 100 fights.Last edited by Thunder Lips; 09-02-2007, 07:37 PM.Comment

Tunney is also one of the three heavyweights to beat everyone theyve faced...alongside Marciano and Lennox.
I frankly have absolutely no idea why Jack Dempsey is rated higher on the p4p lists than him, especially considering how lousy his record is compared to many other fighters.

Because Tunney really isn't a Heavyweight: He's a Light-Heavyweight. In a career that spanned some 60+ fights Tunney had all of five fights at Heavyweight. All the rest were at Light-Heavyweight where he is properly rated.Tunney is also one of the three heavyweights to beat everyone theyve faced...alongside Marciano and Lennox.

Tiger Ted Lowry might have been one of the toughest boxers that ever lived.
He was the only man to go the distance with Marciano twice, only the 2nd out of 5 men to make it to the final bell.
He was only stopped 3 times out of 144 fights.
He was still training kids just a few years ago.Comment

but wouldnt the Light Heavyweight moving to Heavyweight idea strengthen his placement on a p4p list? he might not have had a huge run at Heavy, so Im not bummed about him not being highly rated there, but in overall achievements having such a record plus moving up so much in weight ought to warrant him a better ranking than Dempsey...
and I never thought of Ike lol...was he ever a heavyweight champion? I dont think he was...but let me rephrase it...one of the only undisputed heavyweight champions to retire having beaten everyone he faced
but that was good thinking, haha

No, you are absolutely right! Tunney belongs on ANY p4p list no question. I would point out too that I tend to be su****ious of placing Heavyweights on p4p lists, so by my lights, on an all-time p4p Tunney belongs there and Dempsey does not. On an all-time Heavyweight list I don't believe Tunney belongs because he didn't have sufficient fights at Heavyweight to be rated (the same is true of Michael Spinks), Dempsey ranks high on an all-time Heavyweight though.but wouldnt the Light Heavyweight moving to Heavyweight idea strengthen his placement on a p4p list? he might not have had a huge run at Heavy, so Im not bummed about him not being highly rated there, but in overall achievements having such a record plus moving up so much in weight ought to warrant him a better ranking than Dempsey...
