right now Beckham is the most famous athelet.

I notice many super famous athleat they are not knowen for the sproting skills but they are more knowen for what they do outside the ring.

Like Dennis Rodman vs Scott Pipen or Ali outside the ring vs inside the ring

                That's what made him.

No dissrepect to Europeans and Brits in particular but America is a country with 350 million people living in it. It's damn near almost the size of all of Europe and there are 50 sports stars more recognizable than Beckham.

Soccer gets no love in the U.S, it's a shame because its a great game but it's true. Also, the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, golf, tennis, boxing are all more popular than soccer and you can see that in the rating numbers.

David Beckham is popular because he's a good looking guy that has a huge following of adoring women and because he married another celebrity and that has helped his image. Even though most Americans don't know who the hell the ****e girls are anyway.

The U.S is very egocentric, most Americans believe that the world revolves around the U.S and don't see or care about other cultures or stars. It's just the way it is and I don't see it changing and it has alot to do with the amount of money American sports generate.

Worldwide theres no contest, theres only Tiger Woods whos as famous as Beckham
                    Just a side note:

Dancing with the Stars is not a two-bit show. It is consistently among the top-ten rated shows in America with a viewership of 20 million per night.

In the UK, I believe you call it Strictly Come Dancing. I don't know how popular it is.

But here in the USA, it is massive.

In 2005 the population of Europe was estimated by the United Nations to be about 728 million.

Beckham is one of the most famous celebrities in Europe, add to that his fame in South America and Asia and you have a level of fame that US sports stars with very few exceptions (Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson), simply can't hope to compete with.
