I dont think he tries to be witty as much as he just tries to get under your skin with direct insults. But to be honest, like i told another user, he actually is pretty well spoken when he wants to be, as opposed to james toney whom i have to really listen closely to understand what hes saying.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr interview follows. I guess I fail to see all the "ebonics" and "inarticulate" charges. Does trash talk usually (visibly) affect and/or influence the opponent's fight performance? Ali is generally accepted as a great trash-talker. Do you feel his talking gave him an in-ring advantage over Frazier, Norton, etc?EDIT: To Black Jesus re: Floyd talk vs Hatton.
i think you're mixing up racial background with intelligence and wit.
Floyd isn't funny - his trash talk might work (have we seen any evidence of this? it certainly didn't seem to influence Oscars fight performance) but he doesn't have the wit that Hatton does, or rather his wit is appreciated on average those who have a limited experience of comedy.
Maybe Floyd's trash-talking DID affect Oscar. Did DLH think FMJ was gonna fight toe-to-toe for 12 rounds? I don't know.
Will Hatton be using 'British wit' as a substitute for clean punching? Effective aggresssiveness? Or ring generalship? Or defense?Comment

theres nothing "British" about wit, stop bringing race into it.
Mayweathers trash talk didn't change oscar's fight plan, he just couldn't keep up the pace and floyd fought well. Ali certainly got to foreman, and I'm sure other fighters have been affected by the build up to a fight, whether it be overconfidence or intimidation, or by gaining steely resolve. I can't see it being anything except perhaps the latter between Hatton and Floyd.
If he was as good at winding people up as he is at boxing, maybe it would be different. But he's ****.Comment

Ali got to foremon not just because of his talk, but the entire public was behind ali during that fight in africa, it would probably annoy me too. I do think mayweather must be good at something, because people on this site hang off his EVERY word, so to say hes **** negates the fact that people do pay attention to himtheres nothing "British" about wit, stop bringing race into it.

How is saying that someone is "British" classified as racial? YOU are the one making it racial.
Lennox Lewis
Frank Bruno
Nasseem Hamed.
The reality is that Brits have a different way of communicating than Americans do. Generally speaking, Americans have a more in-your-face style of speaking. And apply that to jokes, humour, sitcoms, etc.
Have you ever watched British comedies? They are much more subtle than American comedies.Comment

Well, Oscar said that it got under his skin. I'll take Oscar's word at that.theres nothing "British" about wit, stop bringing race into it.

I see a lot of jealousy around here. That is very corrosive.Comment
