Both are hard punchers, with Cotto being the quicker guys but margarito with the better chin. What more would you want?
I think this loss to Williams can be atributed to bad handling of Margarito. He had the fight with Cotto lined up and should have took that one instead of Williams.
If we took the formula that you want to take in order for fights to happen, some of the greatest fights in the history of boxing would have never happend. I believe Marg and Cotto would be a great fight no doubt reguardless of what happend with Williams. I say let it happen.....
Get less money for than other guys
Get less respect for than other guys
Add less to his legacy than other guys
What other reasons can I name? The other belt holders Cintron, Williams and PBF would all bring a greater degree of all of those things including the fact that each of them would bring a BELT.
Then there are other guys like DLH, Hatton and Mosley who would also bring in more money and have a bigger mark on his legacy than Margarito.
Margarito is far down the list of best candidates for Cotto. I'm not dis*****g that it would be an entertaining fight but its not the best choice.

why not have Williams vs. Cintron if yall want unification. I think that would be a fun fight, and they both have belts, unlike Margarito and Mosley.
I would prefer Cotto to fight either Mosley or Margarito. These seem like much more exciting fights to me. Williams is always goign to be fun to watch with that punch output of his, but I think the disparity in height and the very opposite gameplans of each wont work well together. Cotto wouldnt wnat to do anythign on the outside, and Williams wouldnt want to do anything on the inside with a guy like Cotto. So it would kind of turn into a clinchy fght I think.

As far as money, a fight with Margarito would generate big money simply because it's an exciting fight with two guys who have similar styles and not to mention the Puerto Rican and Mexican fan base it will generate.
The one thing I will agree on is the title isn't in Margarito's hands anymore so you are right in that aspect. If Cotto want's to unify the title then I guess Marg isn't in his near future. Margarito is only 29 and still has alot left in him and I think he will have a play in this division just yet.

i think the fight should happen, williams just got in the spotlight he needs to make his time and defend that title a few times before giving him a big fight like margarito did, margarito deserves the fight against cotto but idk if arum would want that

I know YOU may not think much of Margarito but the boxing world does and believe me he's a guy that most fighters DON'T want to fight. He's a tough fighter that would cause anyone problems and beating him earns you respect. So that covers points 1 and 2 about legacy and respect.

Dude I dont know how you can believe that beating Margarito adds more to Cotto's reputation and respect than beating Williams, Mosley, PBF or Hatton.
Why would beating Margarito gain him more respect? Just because Margarito THINKS people fear him, pff? Williams just beat Margarito so right there that kills one of your guys. PBF is undefeated p4p fighter which would also be a better win. Mosley is a former p4p HOF who still has a lot left.
Also Margarito is FAR less marketable now with ANOTHER loss on his resume and coming fresh off a loss. A fight with Mosley, DLH, PBF, Hatton would EASILY generate more money.
I think some of you guys dont realize that Margarito LOST and therefore screwed up the whole fight with Cotto. You guys can complain all you want but Margarito is to blame for this fight not happening right now.

Here is the article that mentioned Cotto, you gotta love this guy. He wants the best at Welter, doesn't matter who it is. He has a ton of options, it will just be exciting to see who gets the matchup:
By: Carlos Narvaez Rosario for El Vocero
Miguel Cotto has no objections for Paul Williams being his next rival: if that is what Top Rank wants.
The unbeaten WBA welterweight champ has one more defense on his agenda before the year ends and Paul Williams is in 1st place of opponents dreaming of fighting Miguel Cotto, the welterweight division's new star.
Williams took the WBO belt from Antonio Margarito, defeating him by unanimous decision in a fight held at Carson, California.
The man known as 'The Punisher' was favored in the three judges' cards by scores of 115-113, 115-113, and 116-112 to maintain his unbeaten record and improve it to 33-0 with 24 KOs.
The victory places Williams on the doorstep of a possible unification fight with Cotto, who would not mind meeting him before 2007 is over with.
"Nothing impressive and I was not impressed at all with the fight," comment Evangelista Cotto, trainer and manager of the Caguas fighter. "I believe Margarito failed in his strategy. They left their strategy until too late and they had to put it in effect earlier because Margarito was stronger than Williams, whose only advantage was height and reach. I believe that Margarito could have won the fight," he added.
Cotto would have no problem with facing Williams, if that is what Top Rank (who have expressed frustration with Margarito since his close victory over Joshua Clottey) wants.
"I still have not discussed a future rival, but there is no problem in facing Williams. It's a matter of sitting down, talking, and coming to an economic agreement to then begin working," added Evangelista Cotto.
Cotto is coming off a career best showing in dispatching by TKO Super Zab Judah last June and this improve his record to 30-0 with 25 KOs, a similar record to Williams'.
The Caguas native could return to the ring between November or December for a new defense or a title unification.
"We still don't have a fixed date, but we know that we will make one more fight this year. It will either be November or December. Right now Miguel is traveling and we are waiting for him to return to talk. But we are not only willing to fight Williams, but everyone fighting at 147 lbs. In Williams' case, he is a boxer who does nothing extraordinarily, and his only advantage is his height and reach."
Yesterday Bob Arum did not completely discard that Margarito continue to be on the list of candidates to face Cotto.
