Mayweather v.s Williams take your pick and why?

There is an old saying in boxing. A good big man will always beat a good little man.

How will Floyd beat a man with an 8 inch height advantage and a 12 inch reach advantage.

He wont be able to throw his pet left hook, Williams is too tall, his arm doesn't extend 8 inches above his head in a hooking position.

He wont be able to throw strait right hands, he loses height when he lunges.

You will probably bring up Leonard Hearns as an example of how it is possible.

Hearns was only 3 inches taller than Sugar Ray Leonard and only had a 4 inch reach advantage. Compare that to an 8 inch height advantage and a 12 inch reach advantage for Williams.

Williams has nearly 3 times the height advantage Hearns had on Leonard, and Williams does have 3 times the reach advantage that Hearns had on Leonard.

Paul Williams is the size of Lennox Lewis.

There should be rules against guys his size fighting at 147, especially when they put on 17 lb after weigh-in. I dont think anyone could really compete with him at 147 when he comes in at 160 and is as huge as he is.

Imagine if Manny Steward got him as his charge. Its really not fair to other fighters. Williams should be forced to go up in weight, or same day weigh-ins need to be imposed.

That is the saying but it was meant in a case of if both guys were the exact same. This is different. Were not talking about 2 good guys. Were talking about the P4P king here. Williams is good and maybe damn near unbeatable at 147 but we still havent seen enough of him to put him on that level.

As for the fight itself. Floyd fights different every fight depending on the opponent and I think he will have a great game plan for Williams. Like I said in the other post, people underrate defense. Its huge when you have a great D and the other guy has none. That automatically makes the fight close right there. Floyd is too smart and has been in the game too long not to figure out how to land shots on this guy no matter how big he is and Williams has never fought a guy with Floyd's D who can pick off alot of his shots. After the Mahtysee fight everyone was talking about this matchup and picking Williams even back then. I said that Floyd would also walk this guy down. He probally wont have to walk far since Williams will try to use his size but Floyd will come right at this guy. He will keep his guard up tight to infront of him & to this side of his head like Winky. He would walk in behind the guard and catch alot of his punches while firing back.

I actually think you could see some great in-fighting in that fight similar to Floyd's fight with N'Dou. Floyd would get in the pocket and go toe to toe alot with him. He'll try to pick off his punches and fire back with combos to the head and alot to the body. I think it will look impressive and look like he's winning because I think that even though Williams would throw be throwing more punches, I think that Floyd would land clean nearly every time and will be blocking alot of Williams. Sometimes height can actually backfire on you. I think if they were close like that then Floyd would be almost in craddle that would be hard to penetrate while punching downward. I think he would fight that fight similar to the way Clottey fights. In that tight craddle and then firing back with combos.

It could be tough but Id go with Floyd, mostly on experience alone. You could see tonight that Williams was clearly better but his lack of experince nearly cost him down the stretch. It would be even more evident against Floyd

I dont think you are really comprehending the size difference. Floyd wont be able to in fight. He wouldn't be able to throw upercuts, or hooks to the head. He would only be able to dig to the body and throw looping overhand right.

Floyd is literally chest high on Williams.

Williams would beat Mayweather on distance and work rate alone... But it isn't a real fair fight.

Williams would also get KTFO by Wlad/Samuel Peter/etc but thats because Wlad is so much bigger... Same thing goes for Williams vs Mayweather.

thought tony would win but paul did it convincingly.

that said...i still pick mayweather with the UD. too much speed and too crafty with the counterpunches. yeah paul will unload on him but i cant picture mayweather standing in any one spot for too long.

as for the reach advantage, mayweather's shown he's comfortable fighting in the pocket and paul has a tendency to fight close despite his length. height is an issue but floyd hasn't had any problems going to the body.

will be an awkward fight for sure, but mayweather pulls it off.

Tonight he was impressive. I find it hard to think of a way to beat him. He has to be one of the most awkward fighters ever. He's atleast 6'3, has extremely long arms, and throws 100 punches a round. For a Welterweight, thats insane.

I think Mayweather would work Williams' body and beat him, but its a very interesting fight.

I have a hard time believing there actually in same weight division.. Williams is a real tough opponont for anyone to beat at 147.. he is tall with alot of reach and moves very well while throwing alot of punches. There is many threats fight now at 147, Floyd has his work cut out for him.. if he fights them that is..

Man, these are my two favorite fighters... And I actually liked Williams long before this fight to clarify...and Mayweather long before the DLH fight... Williams in a close decision over Mayweather... I already knew Paul had all the tools coming into this fight... now I know he's got heart, determination, and an incredible will to win as well... Nobody's beating Williams in the welterweight division right now... I doubt these two will ever fight though... Mayweather would have to be out his mind to take him on...

This is unreal. Williams now because he beat Margarito? That's apparently how this goes. Whoever wins the next "big" fight in a division Floyd can realize, then there it is.

Who was Williams before a few months ago in most people's book? More than half of you did not even know of him. Of that I am certain.

And now, he can beat Floyd because he's tall, because he's this and that?

He's new. He's a promising talent that needs to be cultivated and needs experience. He needs a lot of work. A lot of work and someone as experienced as Mayweather would have a field day debunking just that. His height gives him merely a slight physical advantage, but against someone as physically and mentally experienced as Floyd Mayweather Jr., no matter what is said about him.


There is always someone who can beat the best. Always. But, for logic's sake, let's not render subjective and baseless judgements pertaining to Williams' victor over Mayweather when we really know nothing of him well enough to make an educated guess. Not after one notable victory. IMO.

The fact that this is even being discussed (and dismissed by one or two slightly odd people) is the exact reason this fight needs to be made. Floyd has stated that he will continue in the WW division. As of now Williams is the man with Cotto on his heels.
Mosley is a 3rd choice for me as he is aging and is Floyd's easiest 'big name' welter.
C'mon Floyd, Williams and Cotto. After Hatton of course.
