  • Do You Give Fighters Credit for Fights They Lost?

When considering a fighter's resume, do you give them credit for fights they lost?

No, you don't deserve credit for a loss.

Yes, but only if it was controversial.

Hell yes I do. Being undefeated is overrated. You understand a fighter better from his losses.

Yeah I do, a loss can be good for a boxer in the long run, it can make them improve.

          Yes I Do.

Even if it's a one-sided beating, I imagine the boxer who got beaten knew what was coming but they wouldn't remind themselves of such.

I respected Malignaggi for having heart against Cotto, I gave respect to Gatti for wanting to continue fighting Mayweather as the same with Phillip Ndou who didn't want to give up either.

It depends on how they lost. If they got blown out then hell no but if it was a close fight but the other man clearly won you can't still respect the losers fight game.
Other than still respecting the losing fighter what credit can you give them? There is a difference between respect and credit.

All the best fighters have tasted defeats, coming back from a big setback and reclaiming your place at the top of the game takes tremendous courage and heart. Fighters who retire undefeated are a product of excellent management and calculated risk management.

I take into account the controversial defeats, certainly, but I don't go so far as to amend the fighter's official record so to speak. My P4P list puts Taylor ahead of Hopkins even though I believe Hopkins won both fights, for example.

However, in my mind Hopkins was never dethroned as middleweight champion. At the same time, I recognize Taylor is the only real champion at middleweight (this is because Hopkins no longer fights in the division, though).

There's no clear-cut answer to your question other than you have to take into consideration these factors.

A guy like DLH, for example, had a hugely-controversial loss to Tito that most saw him winning, but he also has won a few fights (Whitaker, Sturm, Quartey) that alot of people had him losing. For DLH it evens out, but for Taylor, where alot of people thought he lost to Hopkins both times and to Winky (like me), he gets ripped for his "Bad Decisions".

Your favorite fighter, Hatton, had the one controversial decision with Collazo, and I didn't score that fight in earnest, but had I done so I probably would have favored Collazo. However, Hatton got the official 'W' and you have to abide by that, in my opinion--with exceptions being the outright robberies like Augustus-Burton and the like.

I think that is the thing I hate the most about boxing. How commentators always say BUT WHAT A HECK OF AN EFFORT FROM SO AND SO. They always say he'll be back and he'll have a successful career. How many times do we have to see these guys fail to realize they didn't deserve credit for fighting a guy close?

They said Phillip NDou would be back after Mayweather. Nope.

They said Ricardo Torres would be back after Cotto. Nope.

They said Kelson Pinto would be back after Cotto. Nope.

They said it about Lovemore NDou several times. Nope.

They've now said it about Elvir Muriqi. I'll keep an eye out for his name coming up on the losing end of a fight real soon.

I could go on for days with this, but the point is, you didn't win. Should we give you a title belt for effort?
